Garrard’s Gold Cup Final Form Guide & Tips
(1) Without a Trace (Best Bet – $1.75)
One of the best stayers in the country after posting 17 wins from 27 starts. She blew them away in the heat to score by 6.5 lengths, and another win is likely.
Punters must take short odds for the favourite, but she should burn past them down the back straight and put them away comfortably.
(2) Jay Walking ($5.50)
Nothing wrong with his heat win, and he’s now unbeaten in two runs at the track and distance.
The 16-time winner can’t be left out of Gold Cup picks, and if he’s able to land in front of Without a Trace, he’s strong enough to hold her off.
Take the each-way odds with bookmakers.
(3) Magpie Hector (Best Each Way – $4.00)
He was an impressive heat winner when scoring by 7.5 lengths, and he’s the biggest danger to the favourite.
The two-year-old son of Feral Franky owns 11 wins from 25 starts, and it was an impressive track and distance debut.
Luck is enough to take him close to winning.
(4) Zipping Xaden (Best Roughie – $15.00)
He finished second behind Hector Magpie last start, and we’re happy to use that as a form guide.
We expect most of the form to come from the inside five dogs, and despite paying $15, he can’t be overlooked as a win and place chance.
(5) Fade to Black ($7.50)
We believe he’s the only other runner in the field capable of causing an upset. His run for second behind Jay Walking was good after settling back early in the run.
He’s able to make up ground late in the run, so if they go hard early, he could be the one finishing off better than most.
(6) Goldmine Fire ($35.00)
His recent form has been consistent, but we can’t see him running well enough to figure in the finish.
(8) Mepunga Lara ($31.00)
Another runner with good form, but she needs to find 3-4 lengths to go close. Wait for her to face easier opposition.
(9) Starfire Tears ($27.00)
She gets a run with the scratching of Zig Zag Man, but she’s not a genuine winning threat.
(10) Unreal Speed ($23.00)
Unlikely to run, but with 10 wins from 17 starts, he is good enough to cause an upset at big odds.
