The Phoenix Form Guide & Tips
(1) Schillaci (Best Each Way – $4.60)
The defending champion didn’t fire last time out but he should be tough to beat off the inside draw.
He owns 16 wins from 40 starts, including a win and three placings at the track and distance, and finding the rail will go a long way to him winning.
Punters get each-way odds and he’s the biggest threat to the favourite.
(2) Big Energy ($6.50)
Getting $6.50 for a runner like Big Energy is tough to pass up, so we’re not leaving him out of our calculations.
The 20-time winner doesn’t have the best form at the track and distance, but he is a past winner here and he was brilliant winning two back.
The early dash is important and he could get the better of it.
(3) Excavation ($5.50)
Boasting four wins from six starts at the track and distance, including a Group 1 win three back, Excavation is another top winning chance.
He defeated a quality field by a cracking eight lengths before placing behind Sunset Frazier and Smooth Plane.
He will need to be better than his last two, but returning to The Meadows could work.
(4) Sunset Frazier ($6.00)
If the two-year-old finds the front, he will be tough to beat. However, finding the front with pace on his inside won’t be easy.
He could get shuffled back in the early stages, which would give him no chance. Like many greyhound races though, if he starts well, he can put them away.
(5) Daysea’s Rory ($67.00)
Big odds for a runner boasting an impressive winning streak, but those wins have come against much easier opposition.
The Queenslander needs an awful amount of luck from the draw, and we can’t see him winning.
(6) Lakeview Emily (Best Roughie – $9.50)
Winning tough races is what Lakeview Emily does best, and the two-year-old could make it three on the bounce on Saturday.
She won at The Meadows last time out by 1.5 lengths when beating Field Day, which should be a handy form guide.
Trap six is the worry but her class could see her settle handy and kick strongly.
(7) Smooth Plane ($9.00)
Smooth Plane adds more depth to this field but he might have wanted a draw closer to the rail.
He has 21 wins and 17 placings from 60 starts, so he has been around the mark throughout his career, including five wins at the track and distance.
Given how many winning chances there are in The Phoenix, we’re prepared to leave him out of our picks.
(8) Explicit (Best Bet – $3.20)
Boasting 26 wins from 36 starts, the race favourite is the one to beat after beating a Group 1 field by eight lengths at Sandown Park.
He’s an explosive type when he hits the ground running, and with four wins at the track and distance, he knows the track well.
We loved the $3.40 last start and getting $3.20 this time in is ideal.
(9) Tim Zoo ($6.00)
We’re not sure if Tim Zoo will get a spot in the final field, but his last two wins have been excellent.
A lot would depend on what draw he gets if there is a scratching, but as it stands, we don’t expect him to get a start.
(10) Field Day ($8.00)
He needs luck to get into the race. A danger if he does, but we’re prepared to leave him out.
