Australian Derby Form Guide & Tips
(1) Observer ($3.00)
The Victorian Derby winner who will love the rise in distance after battling away for third over 2000m last time out.
We fancy his chances to win, but the $3 is a touch short, and Green Spaces could be the runner with more momentum. However, we won’t be surprised if he scores the Derby double.
(2) Road to Paris (Best Each Way – $10.00)
Road to Paris is another runner going for a Derby double after winning the New Zealand Derby last time out.
Kiwi runners have a good record in this race, and we thought that he would be much shorter than $10, so there isn’t much respect in betting markets.
He is still learning the racing caper, which is a scary thought.
(3) Green Spaces (Best Bet – $3.20)
Warming up nicely for an Australian Derby win after running second behind Autumn Boy. His closing sectionals were good, and rising to 2400m looks ideal now.
The timing looks right for the second favourite, so we’re taking the $3.20 odds before money comes for him on race day.
(4) Deal Done Fast ($34.00)
A nice enough type on his day, but he could struggle in the Australian Derby. We would prefer to bet on him in something easier.
(5) Storm Leopard ($5.50)
An excellent winner of the Tulloch last week. It’s not easy to back up seven days later, but he kicked away impressively.
The $5.50 odds are on the shorter side of value, but we’re not leaving him out.
(6) One Step Closer ($23.00)
Not a bad run to place two starts ago before running fourth last time out. He lacks a turn-of-foot, which is often needed to win this race.
(7) Federalist (Best Roughie – $13.00)
His run for fifth behind Autumn Boy was a nice enough effort to be considered here, and we think he will appreciate the rise in distance more than most.
Winning form is tough to come by, but he is a live trifecta hope.
(8) Savisanta ($35.00)
A strong second placing at Caulfield last start, but there is more depth to this race, and he could struggle to show his best.
(9) Victorious Spirit ($21.00)
Only fair last time out, and we needed to see more from that run. $21 is on the shorter side of what we wanted.
(10) Kaye Jay ($46.00)
Still in his first preparation, and we haven’t seen anything that makes us want to include him in our Australian Derby picks.
(11) Bingi ($67.00)
He showed good speed early in his career, but his recent efforts aren’t good enough to recommend.
(12) Are You Kidding ($71.00)
Two wins from his last three starts, but this is a big rise in class, and we don’t see him handling it.
(13) Dezignation ($201.00)
Connections are having a go, but he’ll be beaten by the turn.
