Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Kingswood (Best Each Way – $3.90)
It took a big run from Legarto to beat him last time out, and getting back to Ellerslie won’t do his chances any harm.
The Australian raider won impressively at Group 1 level at Ellerslie, and although $3.90 isn’t a huge each-way price, he is one of the horses to beat.
Look for him to settle ahead of Legarto, and it’s tough to peg them back at Ellerslie.
(2) Waitak ($8.50)
A big disappointment in his last two runs, and the stable isn’t quite sure what to make of him. That’s a concern, and although he’s awesome on his day, he might not be enjoying racing at the moment.
His problem has been getting back, and that’s a ticket for disaster at Ellerslie. He’s a first four chance, but he needs to lift to win.
(3) Pier ($3.90)
A game second placing behind Jaarffi last time out, but we don’t think that race is the better form guide for this race.
We’re still including the six-year-old Australian-performed runner in our picks, but the $3.90 odds are far too short for our liking.
His odds could drift to around $5 on race day, which would be a fair price.
(4) The Odyssey ($35.00)
Comes off four consecutive placings, but we don’t rate him as a genuine Group 1 performer.
(5) Doctor Askar ($27.00)
He has made for a good story in New Zealand, and he showed toughness to win last time out at Group 2 level. However, this is a different kettle of fish, and the odds are spot on.
We can’t see him running quick enough to stick with some of the favourites.
(6) Tuxedo ($12.00)
A good winner two back before running fifth behind Jaarffi. There are better form guides in this race, and we expect him to struggle.
Australian rider Ben Thompson comes to ride, but a win seems unlikely.
(7) Legarto (Best Bet – $3.70)
Her run to beat Kingswood was excellent at Te Rapa. She loves that track, but she owns a win and four placings at Ellerslie, so it shouldn’t make much difference.
It was all about her confidence returning after a run of outs, and now that she has a win under her belt, she could win her 12th win from 24 starts on Saturday.
(8) Jaarffi ($10.00)
She can’t be left out of first four picks based on her recent win over Pier. She’s a big mare, and when she warms up, she can finish best.
It’s hard to line up that race in terms of a form guide, but she demands enough respect to include.
(9) Provence (Best Roughie – $12.00)
We love the way she hit the line for third last start at Ellerslie. She’s not enjoying the most consistent season, but she has Group 1 form on the board.
If they go too quickly up front, she could come out of the pack and figure in the placings.
(10) Positivity ($51.00)
She’ll likely be run off her feet. Thought the Auckland Cup would have been a better target.
