Canberra racing tips

Race 1. (12:52) Happy 90th Birthday Margaret Ball BM50 (1200m)

#5 – Needawinna @ $5.00

Needawinna owns two wins from her last three starts, so we’re picking the form runner in this field.

The five-year-old mare by Trust in a Gust scored at Albury before winning again at Echuca last time out, so the form checks out for racing at Canberra.

Getting 3kg off her back is enough to take her close.

Stake: 1.5 Units

Race 2. (13:27) Thoroughbred Park Event Centre BM60 (2000m)

#7 – Party it Down @ $4.80

The four-year-old mare by Divine Prophet comes off a second placing at Canberra, which is a good form guide for this level of racing.

She owns two wins and three placings from 13 starts, and any easing of the track conditions add to her appeal.

It’s an even field, so include her in picks.

Stake: 1 Unit

Race 3. (14:02) John McGrath Auto Group C1 (1600m)

#7 – Angel City @ $2.20

Gunning for back-to-back wins is Angel City, who was far too good for a maiden field at Goulburn.

The three-year-old filly by Harry Angel scored by 2.3 lengths in dominant fashion and getting the inside draw should give her every chance.

This is a winnable race, and the $2.20 odds are likely to shorten.

Stake: 2.5 Units

Race 4. (14:37) Tab Same Race Multi Handicap (1000m)

#6 – Iowna Benz @ $2.60

Iowna Benz has class on her side, and dropping to provincial racing has made a positive impact on her career.

She owns three wins and two placings from 11 starts, including a win at Wagga last time out, and getting in with 55.5kg is ideal.

The $2.60 odds are better than expected, so include her in all picks on Friday.

Stake: 2.5 Units

Race 5. (15:12) Tab Federal Maiden (1000m)

#9 – Slay Queen @ $3.20

Tash Burleigh lines up Slay Queen, who comes off a trial win at Canberra, and she could make a winning return.

The four-year-old mare by Star Witness was with Bjorn Baker before moving stables, and a new environment could help her.

There is solid betting support, which is a good sign.

Stake: 1 Unit

Race 6. (15:47) Stefano Cherchi Memorial Maiden (1400m)

#2 – Call Me Mojo @ $2.70

Money is with Call Me Mojo, who was close in all three runs last campaign, and he could start with a nice effort.

The four-year-old son of Toronado ran second fresh up last prep, and after opening at $3, he has been backed solidly throughout the week.

Punters should expect more money to come for him.

Stake: 2 Units

Race 7. (16:23) Canberra Southern Cross Club Tuggeranong Cup (1600m)

#3 – Mosgold @ $9.00

Mosgold is already a two-time winner this preparation, and although not always the most consistent, she knows how to win races.

She is a seven-time winner overall, including a win at Canberra, and having winning form on the track could be enough to take her close.

Barrier five is ideal, and $9 is a good price.

Stake: 1 Unit

Race 8. (16:57) Tooheys C1 (1000m)

#1 – Honey Perfume @ $2.35

We’re not surprised for the money coming for Honey Perfume, who looks to cap off a series of placings with a win.

The four-year-old mare owns a win and 11 placings from 13 starts, and it’s only a matter of time before she starts winning again.

62kg is a big weight, but class takes her close.

Stake: 2.5 Units

Race 9. (17:35) Grapevine Mortgages C2 (1300m)

#10 – Cruizingthestars @ $3.30

Cruizingthestars is unbeaten after winning at Goulburn twice, and she is a nice filly on the rise.

The three-year-old daughter of Starspangledbanner won by 3.3 lengths on debut before scoring by 1.3 lengths last start.

This is harder, but the $3.30 odds make her a worthwhile bet.

Stake: 2 Units
