Caulfield Cup Form Guide & Tips
(1) Vauban (Best Each Way – $12.00)
We like the odds around Vauban, who has been going through his gears this season, and he’s being primed for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup.
He should settle handy to the pace and give a good kick, and given his experience, he can’t be left out of Caulfield Cup picks.
(2) Presage Nocturne ($27.00)
The international runner might need the run. He comes off a dour third placing, and we weren’t overly impressed with that effort.
There hasn’t been much money come for him compared to the other internationals.
(3) Middle Earth ($17.00)
We’re happy to include Middle Earth in first four picks. He is working towards a good effort, and although he can be tough to follow, this is his grand final.
Punters get good enough odds at $17, which could shorten throughout the week.
(4) Meydaan ($8.50)
The best-backed international, which can’t be overlooked. Recent placings were solid enough without being brilliant, but that’s often good enough to win in Australia in the staying ranks.
He’ll likely be the one they come for to beat the favourite.
(5) Absurde (Best Roughie – $27.00)
We’re used to seeing him line up in the Melbourne Cup first-up, but Willie Mullins is going for a different strategy this year.
He gets in nicely at the weights at 55.5kg, and he finished fifth in the Melbourne Cup, so he’s more than capable.
(6) Land Legend ($23.00)
He showed good ability as a younger horse, but we haven’t been impressed with him since. Happy to leave him out of our Caulfield Cup tips.
(7) Zardozi ($23.00)
Zardozi has turned into a rather dour stayer, but we want to give him another chance. He was well-backed to win the Melbourne Cup last year, and he deserves another chance.
He will battle to the line, and the $23 odds are worth including for value.
(8) Adelaide River ($23.00)
Second behind Birdman two back at Randwick, but we would rather back Birdman if we had the choice.
He’s only a two-time winner, so it’s hard to recommend him as a winning chance.
(9) Bankers Choice ($91.00)
He has a couple of recent placings, but the conditions aren’t ideal, and he could struggle to keep up.
(10) Deakin ($20.00)
Deakin has yet to fire over 2400m, which is the big concern. His efforts this prep have been solid enough, and with 54kg, he could improve.
We’re putting him in our first four picks, but a win would be a minor upset.
(11) Golden Snap ($21.00)
Japanese runners are always hard to look past, but we expected a stronger betting push. $21 suggests that he won’t be cherry ripe for this race, and barrier 18 doesn’t help.
(12) Revelare ($23.00)
He looked to have a Caulfield Cup chance before running poorly last start. We can’t get that run out of our heads, and he might have come to the end of his prep.
(13) River of Stars ($91.00)
Yet to show his potential since arriving in Australia, and that’s unlikely to change.
(14) Birdman ($17.00)
A classy winner two back, and although left a touch flat-footed last time out, we’re happy to give him another chance.
He is a past winner over 2400m, and although yet to see Caulfield, it’s a track that should suit his running style.
$17 makes him a worthwhile inclusion.
(15) Half Yours (Best Bet – $2.70)
We have been keen on Half Yours for some time now, and we’re happy with the $2.70 odds from bookmakers.
He ran incredibly to finish fourth in the Turnbull Stakes behind Sir Delius, and that form is considered some of the best this season.
52.5kg on his back, and we simply can’t see him running a poor race. Clearly on top.
(16) Royal Supremacy ($10.00)
A runner worth including in trifecta and first four bets. He has come through the grades nicely with three wins from his last four starts.
His win at Randwick over Soul of Spain was strong, and there’s nothing wrong with Sydney form this time of the year.
(17) Valiant King ($20.00)
An upset winner at Flemington when beating some well-fancied horses. Helped by the break-neck speed up front, and it could be tough to repeat that performance.
Might be better suited to the first Tuesday of November.
(18) Plymouth ($61.00)
We don’t think he’s up to this level, especially on the quick back-up.
