Doomben racing tips

Race 1. (11:58) Spring Carnival Book Now BM85 (1615m)

#5 – Northern Decree @ $3.50

Northern Decree looks to cap off consecutive second placings with a win, and this isn’t an overly tough field to beat.

The six-year-old son of War Decree is a six-time winner, including a win at Doomben, so having track experience there helps.

The $3.50 odds is a good price for punters.

Stake: 1 Unit

Race 2. (12:33) Eva Air Handicap (2020m)

#6 – Soul of Spain @ $2.60

Gunning for three consecutive wins is Soul of Spain, who won at Ipswich last time out, which is a good form guide.

The five-year-old son of Phoenix of Spain doesn’t know how to run a bad race, and most of his best form comes early in the prep.

Money has come for him, which isn’t surprising.

Stake: 2 Units

Race 3. (13:08) Sky Racing BM78 (2200m)

#2 – Piggyback @ $2.70

We have backed Piggyback multiple times this preparation, but going from Sydney to Doomben helps her chances.

The five-year-old mare owns four wins and four placings from 15 starts, and this field is there for the taking on Saturday.

We’re snapping up the $2.70 before money comes for her late.

Stake: 3 Units

Race 4. (13:43) XXXX Handicap (1200m)

#1 – Sunrays @ $2.80

Looking to make a winning return is Sunrays, who won five of her six starts as a two-year-old.

The filly by Hellbent is unbeaten in all four runs at Doomben, and although winning fresh up with 58.5kg isn’t easy for a filly, she has the class advantage.

Punters should expect another big effort from the favourite.

Stake: 2 Units

Race 5. (14:18) Cricks Highway BM70 (1615m)

#5 – Second Sun @ $10.00

Second Sun showed good speed when winning back-to-back races last preparation, and that form is good enough for this race.

The five-year-old son of The Autumn Sun owns three wins and four placings from nine starts, including two placings at Doomben.

The wide draw hurts but he has enough pace to win.

Stake: 1 Unit

Race 6. (14:53) Ponting Wines C3 (1350m)

#5 – Voracious @ $5.50

Voracious resumes for a spell looking for a win, and because it’s not the strongest field, he should be right in the mix.

The five-year-old son of Maurice owns two wins with Angela Jones in the saddle, and she is having another good season so far.

The $5.50 odds are worth including in Doomben picks.

Stake: 1 Unit

Race 7. (15:28) U&U Recruitment BM90 (1200m)

#4 – Bunker Hut @ $2.25

We’re not surprised by the money coming for Bunker Hut, who hasn’t been too far away from the prize in two runs this preparation.

The six-year-old son of Savabeel is only a four-time winner, but running third at Rosehill is good form for racing in Queensland.

3kg comes off his back, and getting the inside draw is ideal.

Stake: 3 Units

Race 8. (16:07) Bundaberg Rum C6 (1350m)

#11 – Naval Trader @ $5.00

Naval Trader owns a win and six placings at Doomben, and after running second here last start, he’s heading in the right direction.

The six-year-old son of Merchant Navy has a good second-up record, and it’s an even field, so he’s good enough to take advantage.

Barrier two helps, and he could settle handy and kick well.

Stake: 1 Unit

Race 9. (16:43) Ladbrokes Mates Mode Pots BM78 (1200m)

#10 – Gospel Girl @ $4.20

Seeking three consecutive wins is Gospel Girl, who won her last two starts at Eagle Farm.

The five-year-old daughter of Epaulette is a four-time winner overall, so she knows how to get the job done.

Dropping in weight is ideal, so include her in picks at each-way odds.

Stake: 1 Unit
