Epsom Handicap Form Guide & Tips

(1) Ceolwulf ($8.50)

It has been a disappointing campaign for Ceolwulf, despite not being too far behind some of the best thoroughbreds in Australia.

He gets another chance to get back to his best, and although he’s not our top pick, we’re including him in our multiples.

(2) Pericles (Best Each Way – $7.00)

Looking for consecutive wins is Pericles, who was too tough for a good field at Randwick last time out.

That form is good enough to be competitive in this race, and money has started to come for him to beat Autumn Glow.

He doesn’t quite have the same class, but he’s tough, and that counts for plenty.

(3) Yellow Brick ($46.00)

The six-year-old is looking for something a touch easier now, hence the long odds from bookmakers. We can’t see him figuring in the finish.

(4) Autumn Glow (Best Bet – $2.20)

She is unbeaten in all six starts, and she’s one of the rising stars from the Chris Waller stable.

This is her toughest test to date, but she gets in well on the weights, and she would be $1.80 had she not drawn wide.

If she gets cover, she could make this field look second-rate.

(5) Pier ($12.00)

The Kiwi runner has been racing well this year, and he’s a sneaky chance of causing an upset on Saturday.

Barrier 13 won’t matter too much as he’s likely to push forward, so we’re happy to include him in picks at the odds.

(6) Willydoit ($9.00)

Another Kiwi runner who ran good sectionals fresh up, and he could be the forgotten runner. His best form is good enough to go close, and he’s unbeaten in two starts over the distance.

A trifecta and first-four chance.

(7) Encap ($20.00)

Encap has been going through his gears this preparation, but getting back in this field won’t be the place to be. We can’t have him against an elite field.

(8) El Castello (Best Roughie – $21.00)

He showed excellent form as an age-group runner, and he ran good sectionals to finish fourth last time out.

The four-year-old is a two-time winner at Randwick, and some of his best races have come over the mile. Therefore, we’re taking the generous odds.

(9) Depth of Character ($41.00)

He was better last start when third, but he would need to lift a touch to figure in the finish. We’re not including him in our Epson Handicap picks.

(10) Swiftfalcon ($14.00)

Swiftfalcon is becoming a bit of a “gunna” which isn’t the type you want to back on a consistent basis.

The ability is there, but he often chooses not to show it. Dropping to 50kg is ideal though, so he’s worth including in multiples, but he’s always a risk.

(11) Fully Lit ($41.00)

His form has improved significantly recently, which is good to see. However, he would need to find a few lengths to be competitive in this race.

(12) Verona Rose ($31.00)

She was better when placing last start, but that form isn’t likely to stand up here. She should find it too tough.

(13) Magnatear ($61.00)

Big odds available, and he’s looking for something easier than this.

(14) Lord Penman ($34.00)

The former Kiwi was solid fresh up but disappointing last time out. Not ready for the big time just yet.
