Golden Slipper Form Guide & Tips
(1) Fireball ($19.00)
His best form came in restricted races like the Inglis Millennium. 1.4 lengths behind the winner in a blanket finish last start, but McDonald riding is a positive.
It’s tough to bet against the Waller/McDonald combo, but there are better bets in the Golden Slipper.
(2) Closer to Free ($10.00)
He lost no admirers when running second in the Blue Diamond, and the Victorians look better this season.
Barrier 17 hurts, but he is a first four chance if he gets luck.
(3) Guest House ($9.50)
Another runner coming out of the Blue Diamond, which has already produced plenty of winners, including Chayan.
He didn’t have the best of luck at Caulfield, so it was an excellent run, and we’re happy to include him in our picks, in what is a very even Slipper field.
(4) Warwoven ($7.50)
A winner of three of his last four starts, and he has excuses for his run two back. The only worry is the draw, as he likes to lead, but he’s too good to leave out.
We expect money to come for him throughout the week, so snap up the early odds.
(5) Paradoxium ($9.50)
Another Baker-trained runner, and he’s another type that will look for the front. That could prove difficult from barrier 18, so he will need to lift.
Baker hasn’t been helped with the barriers, but the ability is there with this colt.
(6) Stretan Ruler (Best Roughie – $16.00)
A lovely winner two back, and he chased gamely last start when it was hard to make up ground down centre track.
He is likely to get back from the draw, but he could be putting in the big bounds late.
(7) Zambales ($23.00)
He had every chance to break the maiden tag last start in Melbourne, but he had to settle for another placing.
Improvement is needed for him to figure in the finish.
(8) Music Time ($51.00)
He’s gunning for four consecutive wins, but this is a massive rise in class from winning at Canberra.
(9) Campione D’italia ($16.00)
Scored an upset win over a nice field last time out. It’s hard to know if that form will stack up well for this race, and it might have been a flash-in-the-pan performance.
Drawing well helps, so it could wait to see if there are any betting moves.
(10) Hidrix ($23.00)
Only fair since winning on debut. Not running well enough to include at the odds.
(11) Incognito ($67.00)
He hasn’t won this prep, and his form is a few levels below what he faces here.
(12) Streisand (Best Each Way – $8.00)
A strong winner of the Blue Diamond, which is the best form guide. Going this way around could pose a problem, but she has toughness.
We’re not leaving her out at each-way odds, and if she’s there to win at the top of the straight, she could prove tough to get past.
(13) Spicy Miss ($12.00)
She comes off a Group 2 win in the Sweet Embrace. The track played in her favour, so the odds are too short for our liking.
(14) Chayan (Best Bet – $5.50)
An eye-catching run for seventh in the Blue Diamond before scoring a top-level win at Randwick.
She brings in some of the best form in the race, and after opening at $6.50, her odds have firmed into outright favouritism.
We’re happy to put her on top in our Golden Slipper picks.
(15) Shiki ($126.00)
She showed speed early, but her form has come unstuck. Big odds are warranted.
(16) Pembrey ($31.00)
She showed her best form last week, but being on the quick back-up makes it tough. Not much market support, which is a worry.
(17) Agrarian Girl ($46.00)
Easily handled by Chayan last start, and the result could be similar.
(18) Medicinal ($46.00)
A nice type in the making, but she looks more of a 3YO type. Happy to wait until she lines up over further next prep.
(19) Gin Twist ($151.00)
Needs help to get into the field, and she is likely to struggle either way.
(20) Screen Icon ($251.00)
At massive odds and rightfully so.
