Howden Insurance Mile Form Guide & Tips

(1) El Vencedor ($6.50)

It was a pass mark for El Vencedor in the Proisir Plate, and we’re not leaving him out of our picks for this race.

He is one of the best in the country, and he was always going to need a run under his belt following a tough trip to Hong Kong.

(2) Ladies Man ($19.00)

He’s looking for something longer this spring, so we would be surprised if he figured in the finish on Saturday.

(3) Waitak ($9.00)

Money has come for Waitak to score a minor upset at $9. He didn’t have all favours in the run last time out, which is why the betting moves have come.

Racing at Te Rapa suits, so we’re including him in our first four picks.

(4) Sharp ‘N’ Smart ($35.00)

The two-time Derby winner isn’t running well, and connections keep going to the well in the hopes for something better. We can’t see that happening.

(5) Whangaehu ($41.00)

Another runner looking for something longer later this prep. Wait until that moment comes.

(6) Sterling Express ($12.00)

He’s always a tough runner to line up, but he ran fourth in the Proisir Plate, and he’s a two-time winner at Te Rapa.

Given the double-figure odds, we’re happy to include him in Howden Insurance Mile picks as an upset chance.

(7) Habana ($51.00)

He’s not running well enough to win at Group 1 level, hence the big odds.

(8) Matscot ($41.00)

Most of his best form comes down south, and we can’t see his customary big finish coming into play at Te Rapa against an elite field.

(9) Herbert ($35.00)

He was a revelation last year, but his form either side of a spell hasn’t been good. Prepared to overlook his chances here.

(10) Tuxedo ($9.00)

A touch disappointing last time out, but we won’t drop him on that effort. He’s a smart type on his day, and he’s still learning what it’s all about.

(11) Legarto (Best Bet – $5.00)

She deserves another chance after finishing sixth in the Proisir Plate. That was a busy finish, and an unbeaten record at Te Rapa, she could finish over the top of them.

Her electric turn-of-foot is good enough to win, and punters get $5 to snap up.

(12) La Crique (Best Each Way – $5.00)

She’s a lovely consistent mare who doesn’t know how to run a bad race. Her record at Group 1 level is truly outstanding, so there is no way we’re leaving her out of our picks.

The $5 is another value price from bookmakers with Howden Insurance Mile odds.

(13) Quintessa ($6.50)

Her win in the Proisir Plate was impressive when coming from the back. Winning from the back at Te Rapa isn’t as easy to do, but she’s not being left out.

Her Australian campaign clearly took nothing out of her, and if she’s anywhere close to her best, she could win consecutive Group 1 races.

(14) Qali Al Farrasha (Best Roughie – $16.00)

Stablemate to Quintessa, and she adds more depth to an already deep Group 1 field.

She did enough in a similar race last start to warrant attention, and we like the way she raced through the line.

(15) Val Di Zoldo ($51.00)

She’s only a four-time winner and we can’t see her getting close to them.
