Karaka Million 2YO Form Guide & Tips
(1) Kinnaird (Best Bet – $4.00)
His two wins have been strong, and he got past a talented type last time out. That form bodes well for the Karaka Million, and getting barrier two is ideal.
Opie Bosson and the Te Akau operation have an amazing record in this race, and he could be a smart type in the making.
(2) Out of the Blue ($18.00)
Another Te Akau runner who would have been shorter in betting markets had it drawn a barrier. Craig Williams rides, but it could be too tough from out there.
(3) Butler Cabin ($51.00)
Yet to win a race for Jonno Benner, who won the Karaka Million with Vespa in one of the earliest editions. We can’t see history repeating, and the odds are warranted.
(4) Midnight Dart ($35.00)
There hasn’t been much betting support for the Central Districts runner, who won on debut. Safely held last start, and we can’t see him lighting them up.
(5) Ka Ron ($23.00)
Yet to win from two starts, but it has taken two smart types to beat him. He will need luck from the wide draw, which is a concern, but if things go his way, he could run in the first five home.
(6) Magill ($51.00)
A last-start winner but this is a much harder race. Bookmakers have him at the right odds.
(7) Torture ($5.00)
Team Hayes lines up Torture, who won at Caulfield on debut before running fourth at Geelong behind Moana Spirit.
Australian 2YO form is typically much stronger than in NZ, so we’re happy to include him in picks at the each-way odds.
(8) De Armas ($5.00)
A good-looking type who won her first two races in fine style. She has enough speed to burn from a wide draw and find the front, which will be key to her chances.
We’re not prepared to put her on top, but she won’t be left out of our Karaka Million picks.
(9) Dream Roca (Best Each Way – $5.50)
The Queenslander was an impressive winner at Eagle Farm, and she gets the gun run off the inside draw.
That could be all she needs to figure in the finish, as eight of the last 10 winners have drawn close to the rail.
Take the each-way odds for the Birchley-trained filly.
(10) Dashing Dixie (Best Roughie – $11.00)
Nice odds for a filly who won well on debut. She didn’t face a big field, but she did it professionally, so we’re backing her.
The O’Sullivan/Scott stable knows how to train youngsters, and she could be their next standout type.
(11) Stromlinien ($21.00)
She scored a gutsy win on debut at Ellerslie. We’re unsure about the depth of that field, and betting is a good guide.
(12) Vandazee ($18.00)
The lesser fancied of the Birchley runners. She comes off a win, and Angela Jones has already had success when coming to Ellerslie.
We haven’t found room for her, but a good run wouldn’t be surprising.
(13) Zaharias ($51.00)
Her form has been good without being great. She owns three placings from three starts, but a placing would be better than expected on Saturday.
(14) She’s No Saint ($13.00)
Third in a blanket finish at Ellerslie last start. We don’t rate that race as the best form guide, and the $13 odds are on the shorter side of value.
(16) Singletary ($27.00)
Second on debut, but improvement is needed to be competitive.
