Moir Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Rothfire ($15.00)
Rothfire isn’t the same horse he used to be, and he could struggle to pick them up in a fresh state.
Bookmakers have him at the right price.
(2) Midwest ($34.00)
He’s a solid performer, but he was beaten on his merits last start, and we don’t consider him as a genuine Group 1 contender.
(3) Payline ($34.00)
Stormed home to run third three back, but a repeat of that performance is unlikely. He might more time and distance to show his best.
(4) Golden Boom ($31.00)
Another Queensland-based runner who has two placings at The Valley from two starts. He’s a nice type on his day, but as the odds suggest, he might need to wait for something easier.
(5) Queman ($46.00)
He comes off a win in Adelaide, albeit narrowly. Improvement is needed to beat a quality Group 1 field, so we’re not including him in our picks.
(6) Jedibeel (Best Roughie – $15.00)
Punters get odds for Jedibeel, who owns three wins and two second placings from five fresh up starts, which is a tremendous record.
The six-year-old doesn’t mind the sting out of the surface either, so we’re surprised by the $15 odds, which we are happily snapping up.
(7) Baraqiel (Best Bet – $5.00)
He signaled his spring ambitions with a good win at The Valley fresh up, and that should have him in good order for the Moir Stakes.
He’s unbeaten in three starts here, and the $5 odds are generous considering his stats. He has overcome his injury, and he could be a Group 1 star this season.
(8) Sir Sway ($101.00)
Big odds available for Sir Sway, and this would be a sizable upset.
(9) Oak Hill ($23.00)
Backed and beaten last start, but we don’t want to drop him just yet. He loves The Valley, and he could settle out the back and come with a big late run.
Given the odds available, he’s worth including in first four bets.
(10) Arabian Summer ($26.00)
She didn’t fire in her only start at The Valley, and she might need more time to mature this preparation.
(11) Skybird (Best Each Way – $9.00)
She went to another level last prep when winning the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes down the Flemington straight.
She won her only start at Moonee Valley, so there is no reason to leave her out. She owns one of the best turn-of-foots in the race.
(12) Alabama Lass ($5.50)
The Kiwi mare has yet to finish worse than second in nine career starts, so we’re not about to leave her out.
She rides the speed, so The Valley looks right up her alley, and she won at Flemington last start. That field was only average, but she has Group 1 class.
(13) Tiger Shark ($126.00)
As the odds suggest, she will struggle in this grade. Look for something much easier back in Queensland.
(14) Niance ($5.00)
Big bets have come for Niance, who owns seven wins from 11 starts. We’re not sure if she is a Group 1 winner just yet, but it’s tough to look past the odds.
She will need to be good to beat this field, and although she’s not our top pick, she’s included in our Moir Stakes tips.
(15) La Dorada ($35.00)
We are only just leaving out La Dorada, as the Kiwi age-group champ might need longer than 1000m. She has class, and the $35 is a good price, but we’ll wait for 1200m at Flemington.
(16) Esha ($6.00)
She is an interesting runner at 50kg, and weight often matters in these races. She is unbeaten after two starts, but she’s untested against quality opposition.
We’re not sure where to place the filly, but considering the odds, she goes into the mix.
