Newmarket Handicap Form Guide & Tips
(1) Baraqiel ($17.00)
As tough as they come, and although he’s better suited around The Valley, he could still figure in the finish down the Flemington straight.
Odds are better than expected, and he’s a first four hope.
(2) Tentyris (Best Bet – $2.25)
A lovely sprinter, and one of the best in Australia. Comes off three consecutive wins, and his return to racing this prep was a stunning display.
He’s a colt, so he has limited time on the track before heading to stud, and a Newmarket win wouldn’t look out of place on his record.
The odds are worth taking for the star of the field.
(3) War Machine ($12.00)
A proven winner at Group 1 level, and after two poor efforts, it was good seeing him back to his best last time out.
However, he needs to improve to handle this field, and we’re not enticed by the double-figure odds.
(4) Angel Capital (Best Roughie – $12.00)
The jury is out with Angel Capital, but we’re happy to give him another chance. We think he enjoys racing in Melbourne more than Sydney, and it’s only his manners that set him back.
He’s drawn down towards the rail, which could help him switch on, so we’re taking the risk and backing him at nice odds.
(5) Sepals ($18.00)
A lovely type in the making, but we would prefer to see him over 1400m+. He could get run off his feet in the Newmarket Handicap, but a good showing wouldn’t surprise us.
(6) Caballus ($14.00)
He ran a close second behind Joliestar in Sydney, and he has a good record at Flemington with three starts for a win and a placing.
His form has steadily improved throughout his career, and although the inside draw isn’t ideal, he could stick on gamely for a win or placing.
(7) Benedetta ($15.00)
We don’t think she is racing well enough to be considered in this race. She ran third last start, but she was no match for the first two home.
(8) De Bergerac ($101.00)
His best form comes down the Flemington straight, but it also comes against much easier fields, hence the long odds.
(9) Disneck ($61.00)
He is another runner making a sizable step up in class, and we don’t see him handling it.
(10) Gallant Son ($46.00)
Third against an easier field last time out. It came at Group 1 level in the Oakleigh Plate, but it wasn’t the best G1 field we’ve ever seen.
(11) Geegees Mistruth ($41.00)
She stayed in the gates last time out, so we don’t know what to make of her chances here. She is a nice type on her day, but if she’s refusing to run, we don’t want to be on her.
(12) Sghirripa ($101.00)
He’s not racing to a level a needs to at the moment. 52kg on his back helps, but it won’t be enough to win or place.
(13) My Gladiola (Best Each Way – $5.00)
She is a lovely filly who flashed home late to finish second behind Tentyris. She gets in with no weight on her back, so she could turn the tables.
Her form at Flemington consists of four starts for a win and three second placings, and the $5 odds are generous. She is the biggest threat to the favourite.
(14) Wodeton ($20.00)
The stable is trying to figure out this colt, but he keeps finding a few better. We don’t think he’s quick enough to keep up.
(15) Pallaton ($34.00)
A lovely winner last time out, but this is a sizable rise in class. Likely to struggle.
