NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Provence (Best Each Way – $7.00)
Boasting two wins and a placing from three starts at Trentham is Provence, and based on that form, she can’t be left out.
She is a Group 1 winner with an ability to turn his form around, and the $7 odds are generous enough to include him picks.
(2) Qali Al Farrisha ($13.00)
Her lack of winning form is a concern. She has only three wins from 21 starts, and although she’s talented on her day, there are too many other winning hopes.
(3) Quintessa ($7.00)
The Te Akau-raced mare comes off a third placing in the Dubai Classic, which should be a good form guide for this race.
She isn’t as productive second-up, but she won her only race at Trentham, and having Opie Bosson riding is enough to take her close.
(4) Marotiri Molly ($21.00)
We respect her consistency, but this level of racing has always been a struggle for her. The $21 is an accurate price for a tough mare, but she could be outclassed.
(5) Captured by Love ($8.50)
The $8.50 odds are a touch short for Captured by Love. She is a smart type, but most of her best form has come in age-group races.
It’s a wide-open field, and because the odds are too short for our liking, we’re leaving her out of our NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes picks.
(6) Hi Yo Sass Bomb ($41.00)
She would need to find a few lengths to handle this field. The odds reflect her chances of winning in a tough Group 1.
(7) Mary Shan ($41.00)
She is another longshot chance of winning. Her ability is enough to win at the top level, but after drawing barrier 16, it could be too tough.
(8) Chico Mojito (Best Bet – $7.00)
The Australian fought gamely in her NZ debut when second behind Moxie. She didn’t get all favours in the straight, which is why she’s our top pick to win.
She should get into clear running after drawing wide, and her turn-of-foot could be too much for this field.
(9) Khanshe ($17.00)
Money has come for the two-time winner at Trentham, but we have little interest in her current odds, which are too short.
(10) Mare of Mt Buller (Best Roughie – $13.00)
The second of two Chris Waller-trained runners, and she made good ground behind Moxie last time out after getting too far back.
Barrier two ensures a good run throughout, and the $13 odds are generous from bookmakers.
(11) Moxie ($15.00)
Five wins from 11 starts, and she got the better of many of these runners last time out. This is a different race, but the $15 odds make her a worthwhile inclusion in first four picks.
(12) Ardalio ($18.00)
Her best form came earlier in her career, and although she was sound to the line when fourth last time out, there is more depth to this field.
(13) Queen Zou ($31.00)
Her last-start effort wasn’t encouraging, and the $31 odds won’t pique our interest.
(14) Bedtime Story ($51.00)
She got back to winning form at Wanganui in heavy conditions. Another 4-5 lengths are needed on that run.
(15) Afternoon Siesta ($8.00)
The five-year-old owns four wins and two placings from six starts, and she held off She’s a Dealer last time out.
It’s tough to leave her out based on her record, and although she has yet to face this level of opposition, she could handle it.
(16) She’s a Dealer ($8.00)
Punters should expect her to settle back after getting barrier 18. That’s not ideal, but if she gets cover, she could hit the line with purpose.
She was good enough to run in Australia, so we’re not leaving her out.
(17) Electron ($51.00)
Big odds, and based on her form, she has little chance of winning.
(18) Special Sakura ($31.00)
Scored a good win two back, but she will be struggling to keep up with them.
