Otaki-Maori Classic Form Guide & Tips
(1) El Vencedor (Best Bet – $2.50)
El Vencedor couldn’t have been more impressive when winning the Herbie Dyke Stakes by three lengths at Te Rapa.
He should have no problems finding the front from barrier two and running down the leaders can be difficult at Ellerslie.
The $2.50 could shorten on race day.
(2) Waitak ($17.00)
We like the way he found the line last time out behind Here to Shock, and rising to the mile could help his chances now.
Punters get value odds for the Railway Stakes winner, and he could boost payouts.
(3) Aegon (Best Roughie – $17.00)
Winning races hasn’t come easily for Aegon, who was a superstar three-year-old at his best. However, he continues to run good races this season.
He ran second at Ellerslie before finishing fourth behind Provence, and it’s about time he scored another Group 1 win or placing.
(4) Meaningful Star ($41.00)
He looked good earlier this prep when winning consecutive races but his recent form hasn’t yielded the same results.
Based on those runs, we can’t include him in our picks at big odds.
(5) Belclare ($13.00)
She won at Randwick and Rosehill earlier this season before running last at Ascot and 10th at Ellerslie.
We’re not sure why she has gone off the boil, but she might not have enjoyed the travel. We can’t include her in picks because she’s too much of a risk, and El Vencedor might take her on in front.
(6) Malt Time ($41.00)
She hasn’t been the luckiest horse this campaign, but we don’t think she’s good enough to win at Group 1 level, hence the big odds.
(7) Orchestral ($3.80)
She got back to her brilliant best when winning at Ellerslie last start, and although she’s not our top pick, she’s not being left out.
The Derby winner didn’t enjoy racing in Australia during the spring, but we think she might be an early autumn type.
The second favourite is easily good enough to win this race.
(8) Konasana (Best Each Way – $5.00)
Australian form stacks up well in New Zealand and that was evident with Konasana winning at Ellerslie last start.
That came against an easier field, and there is much more depth to this race, but the Chris Waller-trained mare is talented.
We’re happy to keep backing her at the each-way odds.
(9) Qali Al Farrasha ($19.00)
The four-year-old has been a model of consistency this time in, winning at Ellerslie fresh up before adding three consecutive second placings.
It’s always tough to rule her out, especially at the odds, but a top four spot could be her best result.
(10) Jaarffi ($41.00)
She is a two-time winner at Ellerslie but she hasn’t been as consistent as we would have hoped recently.
She ran 5.2 lengths behind Konasana last start and we can’t see her bridging the gap.
(11) Mary Shan ($20.00)
The mare comes off a second placing behind Orchestral, which is solid form, but drawing barrier 11 isn’t ideal.
She’s yet to win in seven attempts over 1600m, and we don’t see that changing.
