Sandown racing tips

Race 1. (12:20) Ecycle Solutions Crisp Steeplechase (4200m)

#2 – Not Usual Dream @ $14.00

All the money has come for Stern Idol at $1.10, but we can’t take those odds for the jumping superstar, so we’re backing Not Usual Dream for an upset.

The 10-year-old comes off a second placing, and the son of Shocking is never a win. Beating Stern Idol won’t be easy, but punters get $3.30 for a top two finish.

That’s a fair price against a small field.

Stake: 1 Unit

Race 2. (13:00) Fast Form BM70 (1200m)

#2 – Harpalee @ $4.20

Seeking back-to-back wins is Harpalee, who scored impressively last time out, and this field is there for the taking.

The four-year-old mare won at Pakenham, but she’s capable of handling the conditions here, and she is bred to score more winter wins.

Take the each-way odds available with bookmakers.

Stake: 1.5 Units

Race 3. (13:40) Sportsbet Feed Hurdle BM120 (3400m)

#2 – Normandy Bridge @ $3.00

Normandy Bridge makes his own luck, as he did when winning three back, and a repeat of that could be on the cards.

The eight-year-old son of Le Havre is good enough to beat the favourite Farag, and we expect the $3 odds to firm into favouritism on race day.

Look for him to settle forward and be tough to run down.

Stake: 2 Units

Race 4. (14:20) Ecycle Solutions Grand National Hurdle (4200m)

#1 – The Cunning Fox @ $3.00

The Cunning Fox has been a revelation over the jumps, and we love the way he held off Affluential when winning two starts back.

He deserves to be the Grand National favourite after a wonderful winter, where he emerged as the best hurdler in Australia.

It could pay to take the odds before a stack of money comes for him late.

Stake: 3.5 Units

Race 5. (15:00) Jockey Watch BM70 (2100m)

#3 – Champagne Jenni @ $3.20

Seeking consecutive wins and her third win of the campaign is Champagne Jenni, who has another win in store.

The four-year-old mare by National Defense is rock-hard fit for this race, and although there are some smart types involved, she could be the best of them.

Punters should snap up the each-way odds available.

Stake: 2 Units

Race 6. (15.40) Green Tick BM64 (2100m)

#6 – Speak @ $7.50

Speak didn’t fire last time out, but the seven-year-old mare has plenty of room for improvement.

The daughter of Sea the Moon ended last preparation with a win and a placing, and there is nothing wrong with that form.

Having Jamie Melham in the saddle adds to her appeal.

Stake: 1 Unit

Race 7. (16:15) More Places BM64 (1600m)

#3 – Shiny New Deel @ $8.50

Punters get each-way value for Shiny New Deel, who didn’t fire fresh up, but he always improves with the run.

The Gavin Bedggood-trained gelding by Dundeel will enjoy racing over a longer distance, and we thought he would be at shorter odds.

Getting 2kg off his back helps with the big weight.

Stake: 1 Unit

Race 8. (16:50) Race Replays BM64 (1400m)

#9 – Gallant Prince @ $4.80

Gallant Prince showed good speed when running second last preparation, and he could go one better this time around.

The five-year-old son of Trapeze Artist is taking his time to win another race, but we don’t understand the betting drift after opening at $4.40.

We’re happy to take the better value.

Stake: 1 Unit
