Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Harvey Wallbanger (Best Each Way – $6.00)
We have been waiting for him to score a statement win after four winless efforts. His debut win and his second-up placing were very good, and he deserves respect based on those efforts alone.
He has been a bit plain since, but the stable is confident that he can win at Group 1 level, so the $6 odds can’t be ignored. If he runs to his best level, he could put them away.
(2) Ronaldo ($3.50)
Unbeaten runners always attract betting interest, and he comes off two easy wins. He hasn’t faced much in the way of competition, but he has experience going left-handed.
That can’t be ignored, especially with juveniles, and the shoot at Trentham isn’t easy to navigate. Considering his experience going this way around, he goes in our picks.
(3) State of Valour ($10.00)
The son of Sword of State goes in our first four picks. He has been right around the mark this season, including a third placing behind the talented Lady Antipova last time out.
He might need to find a length to win the race but leaving him out of Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes picks would be a mistake.
(4) Seize the Day (Best Bet – $3.40)
We backed Seize the Day to win on debut when things didn’t go his way, and we’re happy we followed him to win last time out.
His 2.8-length win at Matamata is a good form guide for this race, and we love his action. He’s a Group 1 type in the making, and although he could be stronger as a 3YO, he is good enough to win on Saturday.
Barrier 11 isn’t ideal, but Opie Bosson should settle him on the speed.
(5) Speed Demon ($51.00)
His fresh up run for fifth wasn’t great, and we would be surprised if he figured in the finish at big odds.
(6) Excite (Best Roughie – $10.00)
The colt was no match for Seize the Day at Matamata, but it was a tough day to make up ground. He hit the line well enough to suggest that he could turn the tables.
The James/Wellwood stable knows a thing or two about training young winners, and he represents value at double-figure odds. $3 to place is an excellent option.
(7) Capital Express ($51.00)
Improving with every run, including a placing last start. However, we don’t think he’s a genuine Group 1 horse just yet.
(8) Summer Schemer ($17.00)
She finished a half-length behind So Fear last Friday, and we don’t think that’s the best form guide for this race.
She gets a lighter weight at 55kg, but improvement is needed to take out the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.
(9) Sweetest Thing ($17.00)
Yet to win from three starts, but she could add value to first four picks. She comes off a fifth behind Lady Antipova, which should be a strong form guide.
Barrier six is ideal, and she could track the speed and boost payouts.
(10) Pinafore ($27.00)
The Lisa Latta stable demands respect at Trentham, but she was no match for Ronaldo last start, and we can’t see her turning the tables.
We would prefer to bet on her in something easier.
(11) Vahway ($27.00)
Two placings from two starts, with those coming last preparation. She will win a race soon, but it’s unlikely to come at this level.
(12) St Monica ($8.00)
A winner on debut when beating Butler Cabin. That form runs through the Karaka Million, so it was a strong performance.
We believe that she is a second-string runner from this stable, but a strong performance wouldn’t be surprising.
(13) State the Obvious ($51.00)
She could make a nice 3YO, but she should be outpaced in this race.
