Tab Champions Stakes Form Guide & Tips

(1) Tom Kitten ($9.00)

His preparation has been a little mixed up after missing his first run, but there has been solid betting support for him here.

If he’s at his best, he’s good enough to figure in the placings. We’re happy to include him in our multiples, but a win would be a big form turnaround.

(2) Light Infantry Man ($9.50)

We can’t recommend him based on his recent form, especially at the odds. He needs to find 3-4 lengths to beat Via Sistina, and there are some better up and coming types in this race.

(3) Kovalica ($17.00)

A much better run for third behind Lindermann. That form could be franked at Rosehill on Saturday with Militarize.

We’re not sure where to place him at Group 1 level, but he might be a bit below the best.

(4) Attrition ($14.00)

Running fourth behind Via Sistina in the Cox Plate was a good effort. He was never close enough to win the race, and it was a 3.4-length margin, but it was a career-best performance.

Based on that run, and having Craig Williams in the saddle, he’s figuring in our first four picks. He doesn’t win all that often, but he doesn’t need to win in order to boost payouts.

(5) Alenquer ($51.00)

A solid enough second last start but we can’t see him getting anywhere near them. The odds are accurate.

(6) Pier (Best Each Way – $13.00)

The Kiwi runner has been going about his business this season, including placing behind Ceolwulf. Rising to 2000m is ideal, and he doesn’t know how to run a bad race.

We expect him to settle handy to the pace and give Via Sistina something to chase down the Flemington straight.

(7) Golden Path ($18.00)

Comes off solid enough form, but it’s a level below what he faces here. Specked at odds after opening at $21, and a win would surprise most punters.

(8) Point King ($41.00)

He has good second-up form and he’s a past winner at Flemington, but that’s where the positives end. Thrown into the deep end here, and it could knock his confidence.

We’d have preferred to see him race Oaks Day at Flemington.

(9) Zambardo (Best Roughie – $26.00)

Scratched from the race we wanted Point King to contest was Zambardo. Connections are confident that he’s good enough to win at Group 1 level after rattling off four straight wins.

This is a seismic rise in class, and he’s not helped by the weight scale, but he could be a smart type in the making.

We’re happy to take $26 to find out.

(10) Via Sistina (Best Bet – $1.65)

The Cox Plate winner that deserves to be the short favourite based on her tough Cox Plate win. $1.65 is getting into the skinny range, but she is clearly the best horse in the race, and by some margin.

If she’s not tired after a grueling Cox Plate win, she could put them away.

(11) Benagil ($19.00)

She is often backed at odds to win races, but we can’t make a case for her here. She needs to improve on recent form, and we just can’t see it happening.
