There are some progressive thoroughbreds racing at Taree on Tuesday. The seven-race card is better than most midweek meetings, and many runners have attracted plenty of attention in betting markets already. The track should suit all runners, and the form out of this meeting is worth following for the rest of the spring at the provincial level.

Race 1. (13:35) Barrington Coast Vets Maiden (1615m)

Tasman Deel runs at short odds, but the four-year-old gelding is a serious chance of breaking maidens.

The son of Dundeel ran well for third on debut at Scone before finishing fourth at Tamworth, and this is a much easier field than what he faced.

Barrier four is ideal, and Aaron Bullock riding is a bonus.

Markwell Topsort went close to breaking maidens last campaign with four placings, and it won’t take him long to win this prep.

The four-year-old son of Tassort ran second at Taree two back before placing at Port Macquarie, and his natural barrier speed should see him land on the pace.

The consistent son of Rich Enuff ran second at Coffs Harbour last time out, and getting 3kg off his back for this run is a big help.

We would be surprised if he wasn’t fighting out the finish.

Race 4. (15:25) Taree Cup Calcutta Maiden (1313m)

Running fourth at Randwick is a good form guide for racing at Taree, and Columbo could break maidens here.

The three-year-old son of Pierata wasn’t far behind Proxima Dea, who is a nice type in the making, so the form stacks up well.
