The Everest Form Guide & Tips
(1) Ka Ying Rising (Best Bet – $1.70)
The Hong Kong champion, and top-rated horse in the world, could put them away with ease. Beating Australian sprinters isn’t easy, but there is something special about this gelding.
His winning streak keeps extending, and although there were concerns following a trial last week, the higher odds didn’t last long. He has been smashed into $1.60, and he’s the obvious anchor for The Everest.
Back him to win in all bets, as he’s the best horse in the race.
(2) Briasa ($13.00)
It would be foolish to dismiss the chances of Briasa. We’re not including him as our best bet or best each-way, but he goes into first four bets.
We’re worried about his lack of exposure to fields of this nature, and we don’t think he’s the finished product yet. He may well prove us wrong, but we think he’s better suited to a race like the TJ Smith in the autumn.
(3) Overpass ($51.00)
A natural speedster, that loves racing fresh. If this Everest field wasn’t so hot, we might have considered including him in picks. His trial was solid, and he puts himself in the race, but the pressure up front might be telling late.
At the current odds, we’re happy to leave him out, in a field where you could make a case for most runners.
(4) Jimmysstar ($11.00)
Jimmysstar will get back in the race from the wide draw, and his electric turn-of-foot could be enough to win the race. We expect plenty of speed up front, so if he’s within 5-6 lengths of the lead turning for home, watch him fly late.
There will be plenty of pace in the race with Overpass and Ka Ying Rising, and he could be the big beneficiary. We don’t believe he’s the best in the race, but with the way the race could pan out, he can’t be overlooked.
(5) War Machine ($13.00)
The Stradbroke winner is going slightly under the radar, especially after winning last start. However, this is a different kettle of fish, and he might need more time to win an Everest.
We’ll be happy to back him in other sprint races, potentially down the Flemington straight, but this would be an upset win.
(6) Mazu ($101.00)
We feel like the slot holder had no choice but to choose Mazu, as there weren’t many other options. He wants a wet track, and he’s not going to get it.
His form this season has been good, to his credit, but Mazu being an Everest winner? We can’t see it.
(7) Jedibeel ($201.00)
A bit of a surprise selection for The Everest. He’s not overly suited by the distance, and we think he’ll struggle to keep up.
That’s reflected in betting odds, and finishing in the first half of the field should be considered a success.
(8) Angel Capital (Best Roughie – $23.00)
Angel Capital is an interesting runner. He should have won last start, and that was evident. Stable foreman Charlie Duckworth believes he could be something special, and drawing well is a big bonus.
His barrier manners aren’t the greatest, but if he’s tracking the speed on the inside, his explosive turn-of-foot could be shown off late.
He’s a must-include at the generous odds, especially with place betting markets.
(9) Joliestar (Best Each Way – $7.50)
The Chris Waller-trained mare didn’t have all favour last year, but she’s back to make amends in the 2025 Everest.
There is a sense of confidence in the camp, and although it will take a big effort to beat Ka Ying Rising, she is tough enough to get the job done at each-way odds.
She’s as tough as they come, and although her wins never look brilliant, she is professional, and she will be right in the mix.
(10) Lady Shenandoah ($14.00)
We don’t quite know where to place Lady Shenandoah. She looked electric when rising through the grades, but if she a Group 1 contender at this level?
Her turn-of-foot is top-tier, and she didn’t get all favours at The Valley. We’re prepared to give her another chance, despite James McDonald jumping off. She’s a trifecta and first-four chance if she’s on her game.
(11) Magic Time ($71.00)
We can’t see Magic Time measuring up to this level. The six-year-old could get caught wide, and she is a runner that always needs a bit of luck.
We’re not enticed by the odds, and we can’t imagine there will be much betting support for her on race day.
(12) Tempted ($16.00)
The three-year-old runners are always worth looking at. Tempted wasn’t at her best last start, but that followed an impressive victory.
Getting in with a light weight off the inside draw is ideal, and although she will need to find 2-3 lengths to win, circumstances could see her go close.
Include if you have space for one more.
