T J Smith Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Jimmysstar ($4.60)
We’re happy to include Jimmysstar in our trifecta and first four picks followin a seventh at Caulfield, where he was given no chance to win.
The inside was off at Caulfield, and staying on the inside didn’t help his cause in the straight, so it was a complete forgive run.
He’s an 11-time winner who demands respect.
(2) Briasa ($7.00)
He won this race last year, and his run for fourth at Rosehill was excellent. It was a blanket finish, so she could have easily won.
If she had won that race, her odds would be around $4.50, so punters get odds worth including in a tough T J Smith Stakes.
(3) Giga Kick ($8.50)
It’s tough to leave out runners like Giga Kick, but we believe there are horses running better than him this time around.
He’s fitter for two runs under his belt this prep, but he’s about a length off his best, and he needs his best to win Group 1s of this calibre.
(4) Overpass (Best Roughie – $11.00)
Overpass has enough early speed to find the front and hold them off. He owns four wins and four placings fresh up, so he tends to hit the ground running.
Bjorn Baker always has him ready to fire, and although the $11 odds might put some punters off, he’s worth including at double-figure odds.
(5) Mazu ($34.00)
He needs a lot of rain to show his best form, and he’s unlikely to get it. Conditions are fine in Sydney for most of the week, so he should struggle to keep up.
(6) Joliestar (Best Each Way – $4.20)
We can’t remember the last time she ran a bad race. She is a bomb-proof mare, who was tough in winning two starts this preparation.
The five-time winner at Randwick could continue the Group 1 run of James McDonald, and she should get every chance in the run.
$4.20 for a horse of her quality is great value.
(7) Tentyris (Best Bet – $3.40)
We have Tentyris on top, narrowly over Joliestar. That’s mostly because he’s armed with a lethal turn-of-foot, which was tapered by the off track at Flemington last start.
He’s back at Randwick, where he won his only start, and he could make use of the inside draw by sitting on the back of Overpass and pulling to his outside in the straight.
He’s electric, and good enough to put them away.
(8) Magic Time ($35.00)
Not suited by the track at Caulfield last start, but she is often a track on trust type. Punters get nice odds, but we can’t include her in our picks based on her recent form.
(9) Skybird ($51.00)
A Group 1-winning sprinter, but consistency has been tough to come by. Not this time around at big odds.
