Underwood Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Knight’s Choice ($71.00)
The 2024 Melbourne Cup winner is back for another campaign, and he wasn’t far away fresh up at The Valley.
He will need more time, but an encouraging run is expected.
(2) Buckaroo ($4.20)
A big fresh up run for third, but we’re worried about second-up syndrome. That was an unexpected run over a shorter distance, so he might be left flat footed on Saturday.
However, we’re not leaving him out of our picks. He’s a genuine Group 1 contender, and he has the cup races in his sights.
(3) Smokin’ Romans ($35.00)
An 11-time winner that went close last start, but he’s looking for something longer. Likely to get run off his feet over 1800m.
(4) Desert Lightning ($8.50)
The former Kiwi got back to winning form last time out, which was good to see. He’s good enough to compete at this level, but a place chance could be his best.
We’re including him in trifecta and first four picks at the odds, which are slightly lower than we expected.
(5) Casino Seventeen ($126.00)
Not too far away this preparation but against easier fields. Much harder here, hence the odds.
(6) Land Legend ($27.00)
He ran well fresh up before coming back to them last time out. Might need a few more runs under his belt and 2400m to show his best.
(7) Middle Earth (Best Roughie – $15.00)
Dropping in distance after running over 2000m last start, but he showed a good turn-of-foot when running the best last 400m.
The former European is adaptable enough to win over 1800m, and he’s sneaking under the radar at odds.
(8) Golden Path ($17.00)
Golden Path has attracted attention at double-figure odds following a win at Flemington, but that could be tough to replicate.
He often fails to fire at Group 1 level, and because of the depth of this field, we’re leaving him out of our Underwood Stakes picks.
(9) Sir Delius (Best Bet – $2.40)
He ran a cracking race fresh up behind Lindermann at Randwick, and coming to Melbourne holds no fears.
The five-year-old owns four wins from eight starts, and his form in France was excellent. Everything points towards a win, and money has started to come for him.
Having Craig Williams in the saddle helps his chances.
(10) Moira (Best Each Way – $7.50)
Punters get value each-way odds for Moira, who ran second behind Desert Lightning last start.
The Chris Waller-trained mare will only be better with two runs under her belt this campaign, and she looks ready to win her first race in Australia.
(11) Zardozi ($18.00)
He has evolved into a very dour staying type, and he wants 3200m. Working his way back to the Melbourne Cup.
(12) Anisette ($23.00)
Yet to fire since arriving in Australia for Waller. We would need to see her find something before we tip her.
