Winx Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Light Infantry Man ($26.00)
He needs more time to warm up for longer races this spring, and we don’t think he’ll fully enjoy the heavy conditions.
(2) Ceolwulf (Best Roughie – $10.00)
Getting $10 for a runner as good as Ceolwulf is good shopping, and although his autumn didn’t go fully to plan, he still scored a good win two back.
Boasting a win and a placing in heavy conditions, he should be right in the mix, and running over 1400m in the wet is like running over a mile, which suits him.
(3) Gringotts (Best Each Way – $5.00)
A five-time winner over the distance, Gringotts looks ready to go. He’s also yet to finish worse than third in four fresh up starts, so the $5 odds are worth taking.
Money is likely to come for him on race day, and although he’s not on the same level as Via Sistina, the conditions of the race are ideal.
(4) Arapaho ($31.00)
We can’t see Arapaho getting close to winning over this distance. He’s a stayer, who is targeting much longer races later this spring.
(5) Lindermann ($35.00)
Lindermann had an interesting autumn campaign, and although he looked ready to go to another level, he never produced the big effort.
He has yet to win or place from five starts in heavy conditions, which could rule him out.
(6) Robusto ($18.00)
He was too good for them at Rosehill last start, but this is a sharp rise in class. We would prefer to back him in a normal Saturday grade, not at Group 1 level.
(7) War Eternal ($27.00)
He’s another last-start winner last week, who should struggle competing against the best thoroughbreds in Australia.
He has been specked at odds, but we have no interest backing him at $27.
(8) Diamond Diesel ($91.00)
Punters get $91 for Diamond Diesel, which isn’t surprising. The nine-year-old isn’t up to this level of racing, but good on connections for having a go.
(9) Via Sistina (Best Bet – $2.45)
She’s the best horse in Australia, and she owns three wins fresh up. The heavy track isn’t ideal, but her class should be enough to win.
She owns 13 wins from 24 starts, and her recent trial placing at Randwick in heavy conditions could be sign of things to come.
Class is on her side, and stacks of money has come for her.
(10) Fangirl ($6.50)
Fangirl is another classy runner, but her form wet track form is concerning. She has yet to win or place in five attempts, but she’s much better on soft surfaces.
If the track is upgraded to slow, she is a good winning chance. We’re happy to include her in picks on class alone, but if it’s very heavy, she’s risky.
(11) Full Count Felicia ($41.00)
A former import who ran fourth in her Australian debut. We’re not sure how North American form stacks up in Australia, so back her in something that’s not the Winx Stakes.
(12) Aeliana ($7.50)
She was almost our best each-way, so our Winx Stakes picks aren’t leaving her out. The four-year-old mare will get back in the run and hit the line well, and the only worry is running over 1400m.
However, she is a smart type in the making, and she could have a big spring carnival.
