Melbourne Cup Form Guide & Tips
(1) Joey the Jet ($3.90)
The one-year-old has been impressive winning seven of his nine starts, but this is his biggest test to date by far.
Getting the inside draw is ideal, and although $3.90 is too short for our liking, we’re not leaving him out of our calculations.
(2) Epitomize ($6.00)
Boasting seven wins from eight starts, Epitomize is a logical inclusion at the each-way odds from bookmakers.
He showed good trap speed when leading throughout last week, so a repeat of that could see him being too strong late.
He’s not our top pick, but he’s worth including.
(3) Schillaci ($14.00)
An electric winner last time out when scoring by nine lengths, but his entire race depends on how well he picks the jump.
If he lands on the speed he’s a chance, but if he misses away, he’ll get swamped early and have no chance to win.
(4) Sunset Frazier (Best Each Way – $4.00)
He couldn’t have been more impressive when leading throughout in the heat, beating Excavation in the process.
With 16 wins from 33 starts, he can’t be overlooked here at each-way odds, so include him in all Melbourne Cup picks.
(5) Miss Envy ($9.50)
Shooting for four consecutive wins is Miss Envy, who made it 12 wins from 18 starts overall last time out.
She will need to show all of her pace to find the front, and we can’t see that happening. She has pressure on both sides, and she could get jostled around early.
(6) Explicit (Best Bet – $3.80)
He’s the best greyhound in the race with one of the worst draws. However, his class could be enough to overcome it.
He’s unbeaten in five starts at the track and distance, including a six-length heat win over Fernando Phil, so that’s a good form guide.
$3.80 for a runner of his class is too good to overlook.
(7) Big Energy ($7.50)
He is a 13-time winner at the track and distance, so he’s always tough to overlook. However, this is a red-hot Group 1 field, and he might struggle.
The winner of over a half-million is not an easy greyhound to leave out, but he could find it hard to cross from the wide trap.
That’s why we’re leaving him out.
(8) Buddy Monelli (Best Roughie – $101.00)
We couldn’t turn down the massive odds for Buddy Monelli, who needs luck from out wide, but stranger things have happened.
He got lucky to win his heat when there was trouble in the race, and anything can happen in greyhound racing.
He doesn’t deserve to be paying $101.00.
(9) Excavation ($4.20)
Needs a scratching to get into the field, and if there is one, he’s a good winning chance.
We’re leaving him out as we don’t expect one to come out of this field, but include him if he gets a run.
(10) Deadly Avenger ($11.00)
Running well enough but not good enough to win the Melbourne Cup. Unlikely to run.
