Mufhasa Classic Form Guide & Tips
(1) Perfect Scenario ($14.00)
He has been in good form this preparation but most of that has come against slightly easier opposition down south.
There hasn’t been any money for him since markets opened, and that’s not a good sign for a runner from the Te Akau stable.
(2) El Vencedor (Best Each Way – $5.50)
Looking for consecutive wins is El Vencedor, who was too good for them at Ellerslie when beating Wolfgang by 3.5 lengths.
That was a classy win from the six-year-old son of Shocking, who owns two second placings from two starts at Trentham.
We’re happy with the each-way odds from bookmakers.
(3) Ladies Man ($12.00)
He has been running well without winning this season, and it’s good to see Opie Bosson return from some time on the sidelines.
He’s a past winner at Trentham from five starts, and he wasn’t far away at Tauranga when running fourth in tough conditions last start.
We believe he’s good enough to figure in the finish.
(4) One Bold Cat ($8.50)
Boasting eight wins from 19 starts, One Bold Cat is another genuine Group 1 contender, so he enters trifecta and first four calculations.
He won well at Matamata when beating Skew Wiff at Group 1 level, so a repeat of that isn’t beyond him.
Look for his odds to shorten throughout the week.
(5) Belardo Boy ($41.00)
His form has tapered off since winning consecutive races earlier this preparation, and we can’t see his form improving enough to win.
(6) Lightning Jack ($31.00)
We loved the way he put an easier field away at Otaki last start, but repeating that at the top level doesn’t seem likely.
He’s a tough southerner but without a win from eight starts at Trentham, so we’re happy to leave him out.
(7) Puntura ($41.00)
He’s another runner whose form has gone off the boil. Talented at best and a two-time winner on the track, but his best days could be behind him.
(8) Mali Ston ($26.00)
He’s not the easiest horse to follow at the best of times, but we’re struggling to leave him out of picks at the price.
He finished close behind Wild Night at Tauranga before placing behind Bella Waters and Pearl of Alsace last time out.
Natural improvement could be enough to see him win this race.
(9) Matscot ($16.00)
There has been good support for Matscot this season, but we think he’s a level below the best in the country.
He ran third behind One Bold Cat two back, which is a tidy form guide, but we believe that was Matscot at his very best.
(10) He’s a Doozy ($41.00)
He was better when fourth at Riccarton but that’s not the best form guide, and his odds tell the story.
(11) La Crique (Best Bet – $2.60)
Her win at Pukekohe in the Breeders’ Stakes was impressive, and she showed an elite turn-of-foot to swamp the field on the line.
She’s one of the most electric runners in New Zealand and she won her only start at Trentham, which bodes well.
Getting $2.60 is a fair price and those odds could firm on race day.
(12) Town Cryer ($9.50)
She finds a much harder field than what she beat in the Thompson Handicap last start, but she’s an obvious trifecta chance.
She owns three wins from six starts at Trentham and her best form comes over this distance, so she’s hard to rule out.
If she handles Group 1 racing, she should go close.
(13) Pearl of Alsace (Best Roughie – $10.00)
The six-year-old mare has threatened to win a big race and this is her chance to pay off loyal punters.
She owns seven wins from 17 starts, but she hasn’t been able to show any recent form. However, her last-start placing reads well.
Getting double-figure odds is generous.
