Newmarket Handicap Form Guide & Tips
(1) Benedetta ($10.00)
Benedetta is a two-time winner second-up and some of her best form comes at Flemington, so we’re including her in our first four picks.
(2) Maharba ($23.00)
His form during the Spring Carnival was good, including a win at Flemington over Rey Magnerio. That form is solid enough and he’s another runner paying value odds.
(3) Arkansaw Kid ($19.00)
He’s knocking on the door after consecutive placings but we don’t think he’s good enough to handle this level of opposition.
His odds are slightly too short for our liking.
(4) Buenos Noches ($19.00)
His form hasn’t been as impressive recently as it used to be. He ran better for third last time out, but we’re not interested in the $19 odds.
(5) Joliestar (Best Bet – $5.00)
Getting $5 for a runner like Joliestar is good shopping, and her natural ability is enough to take down this field.
She ran only a half-length behind Magic Time last time out, and coming to Melbourne should result in a good run, so take the each-way odds.
(6) Rey Magnerio ($9.50)
He doesn’t know how to run a bad race, so it’s tough to leave him out. However, despite having never finished worse than third at Flemington, drawing barrier four could see him buried among runners.
Given the depth of this field, we’re choosing to leave him out.
(7) Growing Empire (Best Each Way – $6.50)
The colt by Zoustar didn’t have all favours last time out at Flemington, but his best form is good enough to handle this field.
He is a proven Group 1 winner and getting in with 55.5kg should make him tough to beat, and punters get value odds.
(8) Ostraka ($21.00)
He looked good when winning three consecutive races last preparation but he hasn’t fired in two runs since.
He’s a smart type on his day but this field should be too tough.
(9) Stretan Angel ($8.00)
Money has come for Stretan Angel, who finished second at Flemington last time out behind Skybird.
The four-year-old mare hasn’t won for some time, and she’s only a two-time winner overall, so the odds are a touch short.
(10) It’sourtime ($34.00)
He’s a five-time winner at Flemington but he’s a tough runner to get a guide on. He’s consistent enough to go close but he might get outsprinted in the final 200m.
(11) Sghirripa ($21.00)
We expected more from him last time out, so we’re prepared to leave him out of our Newmarket Handicap picks. He will need to improve many lengths to figure in the finish.
(12) Headwall (Best Roughie – $15.00)
Running fourth behind Jimmysstar last time out is a good form guide, and he’s one of the more improved types in the field.
Boasting six wins from 14 starts, the five-year-old is well worth including and carrying 52.5kg makes him tough to beat.
(13) Suparazi ($51.00)
He has yet to win from four fresh up starts and we can’t see that changing on Saturday.
(14) Espionage ($14.00)
He wasn’t too far behind the pace in the Oakleigh Plate, and getting in with 50kg could make him a winning threat.
It could be worth including him in first four picks, and his odds are worth taking.
(15) Gatsby’s ($15.00)
His best form came early in his career, but he has been disappointing since. Getting in with 50kg makes him a threat, but we need to see more before including him in our Newmarket Handicap tips.
