T.J. Smith Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Overpass ($7.00)
Overpass is a genuine Group 1 sprinter, but most of his best form has come in Perth, and he’s 0-4 on heavy tracks.
We think $7 is too short considering the circumstances.
(2) Jimmysstar ($9.00)
The Ciaron Maher-trained sprinter rattled home to finish third at The Valley last start, and no runners were making ground from the back.
It was a terrific run after getting too far back, and although he’s better going the other way around, he can’t be left out at the odds.
(3) Jedibeel ($41.00)
He didn’t fire when ninth behind Private Harry last start, and the level of opposition is harder on Saturday.
A bounce back is possible, but we’re backing against him on this occasion.
(4) Headwall ($23.00)
He’s an underrated type who finished second behind Joliestar in the Oakleigh Plate, and we rate that form.
He won his only start at Randwick, and we’re not shocked to see his opening $35 odds firm to $23.
(5) Briasa (Best Each Way – $4.60)
His run for fourth last time out was excellent from off the pace, and it was arguably the run of the race.
The four-year-old meets more depth to this field, but with six wins from eight starts, we’re not leaving him out of our picks, especially from barrier three.
(6) Sunshine in Paris ($9.00)
She can be tough to predict, and her second-up form of three starts for only one placing doesn’t read well.
Barrier 11 doesn’t make life any easier, and although she’s classy at her best, we’re risking her in the T.J. Smith.
(7) Joliestar (Best Bet – $3.50)
We’re not sure how she ran at $3.40 odds in the Oakleigh Plate. She’s one of the more exciting mares in Australia, and she put them away with ease.
Coming back to Sydney only helps her chances of winning, and Damian Lane is riding well this season, so that adds to our confidence.
Take the $3.50 before her odds firm.
(8) Magic Time ($10.00)
We liked the way she found the line to win fresh up, but she was flat chasing Royal Patronage last time out.
That effort is a slight concern at Group 1 level, and because of the depth of the field, we’re opting to leave her out.
(9) I Am Me ($34.00)
She is a four-time winner at Randwick but her form this campaign is only moderate. She’s not running well enough.
(10) Kimochi ($23.00)
Her run for second behind Jedibeel was a good effort, but she might be better suited to racing against her own sex.
Given the odds, only a moderate run is expected.
(11) Switzerland ($15.00)
We liked what we saw last preparation, but he has been disappointing in two runs back from a spell.
Three of his five wins have come at Randwick, but we need to see improvement before including him in picks.
(12) Traffic Warden (Best Roughie – $27.00)
Punters get value odds for Traffic Warden, who has been having issues. However, we think he’s over them, and he could produce the goods.
Blake Shinn will likely give him time to find his footing, and he could flash home and pay a nice price.
(13) Shezanalister ($81.00)
She’s not a bad type, and she’ll win plenty of races, but we don’t think she’ll hold off this field.
