Triple J Hottest 100 of Australian Song Predictions
—
Best Bet
When we think of early 2000s Australian rock, My Happiness is the first song that springs to mind, which is why it’s the $2.20 favourite to be crowned the top Australian song.
Powderfinger released a banger in 2000, hot on the heels of the grunge music resurgence. Bands like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were in their prime, and Australia’s Powderfinger joined the club with My Happiness.
The band might not have followed it up with too many commercially successful songs, but it will be forever etched in the ears of anyone aged 30 or older.
We expect My Happiness to be in the top three songs at worst.

Next Best
Big money has come in for Somebody That I Used to Know, which was not only a huge song in Australia but also achieved a global #1 spot.
Australia and New Zealand combined, with Kimbra adding her unique vocals on the track, in what is one of the most recognisable hooks in music history. That’s why we’re backing it to win the top song, and after opening at $9, it has firmed strongly into $5.
The rest of Gotye’s music isn’t close to his most successful song, but he’ll always have a #1 song, and he deserves credit for that.
—
Best Value
There are some older songs in the betting market, such as Daryl Braithwaite’s Horses, but Triple J listeners tend to go with songs post-2000.
That’s why our best value bet is Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap. It’s an excellent song, packed with ethereal vocals from Dougy Mandagi and one of the best drum grooves this century. It gets people off their seats, and it has every right to be shorter than $21.
We think it’s a top 10 choice, so it’s worth including in picks.

Artist to Have Top 100 Song
We are taking the $1.65 odds for The Kid LAROI to have a song featured in the top 100. There are many artists we like with short odds, including Amy Shark, Savage Garden, and Wolfmother, but The Kid LAROI represents the best value.
He’s a global rapping superstar, despite being only 21 years of age, and he could feature in the top 100 for either Stay, Nights Like This, or Go. Triple J listeners love a bit of LAROI, so we would be surprised if he didn’t feature on the list.

Best Upset
We don’t know if Brother from Matt Corby will win, but at the $76 odds, it’s worth having a small bet.
If you haven’t heard the acoustic version of Brother, you’re missing out. It’s a powerful version of his more up-tempo original, and it’s one of the more raw and emotional songs to come out of Australia in the last 30 years.
The former Australian Idol contestant matured quickly after his rise to fame, and he continues to release soulful tunes.
