State of Origin Series Tips
—
New South Wales vs Queensland Series Winner
The Queenslanders are full of confidence ahead of the State of Origin series, and we don’t blame them.
The Maroons have a much better team on paper, and considering how they won the series last year, they should be brimming with confidence.
Bookmakers have the Maroons at $1.65 to win the series, with the Blues at $2.25, and that’s a fair price. We expected Queensland to be around $1.55, so there is solid value with the favourites.
Boasting a team packed with raw talent and experience, the Maroons are tough to look past. They have raw talent with Reece Walsh, Tom Dearden, and Hamiso Habuai-Fidow, who can turn the game on its head at any point.
They have experience with Daly Cherry-Evans and Harry Grant, so there are no weak links in the team. They also have players like Selwyn Cobbo and Ezra Mam on the bench, so it’s one of the deepest Queensland teams of all time.
New South Wales has a quality team, but missing Nathan Cleary is big. He’s a player that can win an NRL Grand Final for Penrith by himself, so his absence plays into the hands of Queensland.
However, the Blues have Dylan Edwards, Nicho Hynes, Payne Haas, and Brian To’o. There is enough excitement in the team to compete, but at most positions, they are dwarfed by Queensland.
We’re backing Queensland at $1.65. It’s the obvious pick, and we can’t see how it gets beaten over the three-game series.
Betting tip: Queensland Maroons @ $1.65
Queensland 2-1
State of Origin Wally Lewis Medal Winner
The Wally Lewis Medal is given to the best State of Origin player, and we’re picking a Queenslander to win.
Reece Walsh is the current $6.00 favourite, but he has been under an injury cloud, so we’re backing Daly Cherry-Evans to win at $9.00.
Cherry-Evans is always one of the best players on the park, and his ability to stay injury free throughout his career is incredible.
He’s Queensland’s chief, and he leads them around the mark. He might not have the speed and excitement of Walsh, but he’s their most important player.
We also like Ben Hunt at $23.00 as an outsider pick. Hunt often plays his best rugby league at State of Origin level, and he comes up with big moments consistently.
If he has a big impact off the bench at the dummy half role, he could win the Wally Lewis Medal.
Betting tip: Daly Cherry-Evans @ $9.00
State of Origin Top Series Tryscorer
Xavier Coates should get plenty of ball on the wing for the Maroons, and he’s our top pick at $6.00.
He’s on the same line as Brian To’o, but because we believe the Maroons will score many more tries than the Blues, we’re picking the Queenslander.
Coates owns only three tries from eight State of Origin games, but he’s still only 23 years old. That’s hard to fathom considering he has played 79 NRL games.
He’s going from strength-to-strength, and we’re happy to pick him as a top State of Origin tryscorer.
We also fancy Valentine Holmes. He is another player who excels at this level, and he has a knack of crossing the white line.
He’s an $11.00 chance, so back both players.
Betting tip: Xavier Coates @ $6.00
