Australian Open Day 9 Tips & Predictions
—
Best Bet
We backed Lorenzo Musetti to win on Saturday, and he didn’t let us down, but the #6 seed could suffer a loss to American Taylor Fritz, who looked good when beating Stan Wawrinka.
Fritz is a tough player to beat when his serve is going well, and he looked good on Saturday night. We’re not surprised to see him opening as the favourite, and he loves playing Italians after going 6-0 in the main draw against players from Italy.
He won the most recent match against Musetti in straight sets, which adds to our confidence levels. Therefore, take the $1.73 before late money comes for him.

Next Best
Madison Keys is the defending Australian Open champion, but she’s not being given much respect against countrywoman Jessica Pegula.
We don’t rate Pegula as an elite player, and although her ranking suggests otherwise, she doesn’t always play her best tennis in the later stages of a grand slam tournament.
Keys has much more experience winning big matches, so we’re taking the $2.41 odds. She knows what it takes to win at Melbourne Tennis Park, and we priced her at $1.80. Punters get $2.41, which is an excellent value price.

We bet against Casper Ruud against Marin Cilic, but he proved us wrong with a comprehensive 3-1 win over the Croatian.
Ruud is a player who has promised to deliver throughout his career, and although he often comes up short, he’s good enough to beat Ben Shelton, who has yet to drop a set at the Australian Open, which is surprising given his defeat in Auckland.
We rate Ruud’s last win higher than Shelton’s, and we’re happy with the $2.26 odds. It should be a close game, and if Shelton’s serve isn’t firing, he’s there for the taking. We still don’t think he’s at his fittest, so look for Ruud, who has more experience, to capitalise.

Value Bet
Elena Rybakina should defeat Elise Mertens, but we’re happy to give Mertens one set on Monday afternoon.
Mertens is a tough player to beat, and although she’s not the strongest player on the WTA Tour, she is a pesky player who changes the pace on the ball. That could give players like Rybakina problems, who loves to smash it from the baseline.
We expect Rybakina’s class to shine through, but Mertens could grab the first set before being run down late by the short favourite. Punters get $3.60 for Mertens to win a set, which is excellent value.
