Canterbury horse racing tips & form
—
Race 1. (18:00) Best of Bordeaux @ Coolmore BM72 (1550m)
#2 – Hellfire Express @ $2.60
Hellfire Express comes off three impressive wins at Orange, Tuncurry, and Canterbury, so he’s steadily rising in class.
The three-year-old gelding by Hellbent owns four wins from six starts, and having James McDonald in the saddle helps.
After opening at $2.90, most of the money has come for the favourite throughout the week.
Race 2. (18:30) Precise Air Maiden (1250m)
#5 – Setombe @ $2.80
Setombe wasn’t too far away from the winner when running fifth on debut at Canterbury.
The James Cummings-trained filly was only 1.4 lengths behind Tycoon Deshauna, and that form has since been franked.
It’s another premium ride for McDonald, who has a good book of rides, and Setombe has the betting support to suggest she could win.
Race 3. (19:00) Prague Yearlings Selling Now Maiden (1250m)
#5 – Customized @ $2.25
Customized ran third behind Storm Boy on debut, and Storm Boy has since won the Magic Millions.
The two-year-old colt by Capitalist was only three lengths behind the winner, and getting the inside draw adds to his appeal.
It’s our third pick with McDonald riding, but he’s the best jockey at the meeting, so why not put him on top?
Race 4. (19:30) Hyland Race Colours BM72 (1250m)
#7 – Tycoon Deshauna @ $4.40
Tycoon Deshauna won on debut at Canterbury, which we believe is a good form guide.
The three-year-old filly by Written Tycoon won by a length in a good time, and she’s good enough to win again.
Getting barrier five with 55.5kg on her back adds to her appeal.
Race 5. (20:00) Kia Evening Star BM72 (1100m)
#9 – Lovero @ $3.20
The five-year-old mare by Astern owns two wins and five placings from 10 starts, including two wins over the distance.
She comes off a good trial win at Rosehill, and if she can bring that form to the table, she should be right in the mix.
We’re taking the $3.20 as it could shorten on race night.
Race 6. (20:30) Cactus Imaging BM64 (1900m)
#1 – Jack Duggan @ $8
Jack Duggan comes off a win at Gosford by just under a length, which is a good enough run to consider.
The six-year-old son of Jack Milton is unbeaten in two starts over the distance, and he should enjoy racing at Canterbury.
It’s not an easy field, but the $8 makes him a worthwhile bet.
Race 7. (21:00) The Agency Real Estate BM72 (1250m)
#12 – Botanica @ $5
Botanica won well at Beaumont two starts back before placing at Canterbury last time out.
The four-year-old son of Written Tycoon has attracted good betting interest throughout the week and dropping to 55.5kg helps.
Punters get each-way odds on race night.
