VRC Champions Mile Form Guide & Tips
(1) Mr Brightside (Best Each Way – $5.50)
He was game as always in the Cox Plate and he didn’t have much peace throughout the run.
We think that’s an excellent guide for this race, and although it’s the hottest Group 1 field of the week, he’s right up there with the best.
(2) My Oberon ($23.00)
Two solid placings from four starts this preparation but winning this race is a different kettle of fish.
We can’t see him improving enough to finish close enough to pay a dividend.
(3) Pinstriped ($41.00)
He owns an electric turn-of-foot, and he’s a Group 1 winner. We wouldn’t rule out his chances of flashing home to finish third or fourth, and given the odds, he’s worth including.
Pinstriped owns two wins at Flemington, so having course experience is another positive.
(4) Antino ($5.50)
A daring mid-race move saw him score an easy win last start by 6.5 lengths. There is more depth to this field, and he has struggled against the best this season.
He has drawn wide, and he could struggle to find a spot. We’re including him in first fours, but nothing else.
(5) Desert Lightning ($34.00)
The former New Zealand runner won well at Sandown two back before finishing fourth behind Antino.
He’s a nice type but we don’t think he’s good enough to keep up with the best Australia has to offer.
(6) Another Wil (Best Roughie – $10.00)
$10.00 isn’t exactly a ‘roughie’ price, but his last-start win was too impressive not to include him in our top picks.
The Maher-trained gelding raced flat two back when beaten by Antino, but he couldn’t have been more impressive when winning on Saturday.
This is the acid test, but he’s a good each-way bet.
(7) New Energy ($91.00)
Only a one-race winner and we can’t see that changing here. Big odds and rightfully so.
(8) Von Hauke ($81.00)
It’s tough to consider him as a genuine Group 1 contender. He likes Flemington but that’s the only positive we could find.
We can’t imagine him looking like a winning threat at any stage.
(9) Pride of Jenni ($5.50)
There is no chance we’re leaving Pride of Jenni out of our picks, but we are worried she might have come to the end of her campaign.
She has raced flat at times this season, and her best form could come in the autumn. However, if she leads by herself, she grows another leg.
It’s all about how many lengths in front she can establish early, and any pressure could be her undoing.
(10) Fangirl ($6.50)
Fangirl ran fourth in the Champions Mile last year, and she could finish around the same spot in 2024.
The Waller-trained mare has a good turn-of-foot at her disposal, but running down the best in Australia isn’t easy.
James McDonald rides, and it’s tough to leave her out.
(11) Amelia’s Jewel ($15.00)
She hasn’t quite been the same horse since leaving Perth, and her lack of recent winning form is a concern.
The talent is there, but we need to see it first.
(12) Stefi Magnetica ($14.00)
She has been backed and beaten a couple of times this season, but she made solid ground last start without getting any luck.
It’s tough to line up Golden Eagle form for a race like this, and she could find it tough to produce the same turn-of-foot.
We’re reluctantly leaving her out, but she has a nice win coming.
(13) Broadsiding (Best Bet – $6.00)
The colt was gone in the Cox Plate but he somehow rallied to finish third, which is good for his future stud career.
A win in the Champions Mile would also look good, and with only 52kg on his back, he’s good enough to finish over the top of them with the use of the long straight.
Getting $6.00 for a runner of his quality is tough to ignore.
