Champions Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Without a Fight (Best Each Way – $9.50)
The 2023 Melbourne Cup winner returns from an injury-enforced spell, and there have been big bets placed on him.
He opened at $23.00 before firming into $9.50, and after a couple of trials, he looks ready to show his best form.
We’re happy to include him in our picks based on that.
(2) Duke De Sessa (Best Roughie – $16.00)
He couldn’t have been more impressive when winning the Caulfield Cup, and there is nothing wrong with that form guide.
We expect him to push forward again, and although it could be a different race strategically, he has enough power to hold them off.
Take the value odds from bookmakers.
(3) Arapaho ($51.00)
That was a better run for fourth last time out but we can’t see him running well enough to figure in the finish at big odds.
(4) Nugget ($51.00)
Nugget has been more like a pebble one too many times this year, and although he ran third last start, we need to see more from him.
This is a harder race and we don’t think he’ll be quick enough to keep up.
(5) Future History ($51.00)
Had everything go his way in the JRA Cup. It was a good win, but this is a different race completely, and as the odds suggest, we can’t see him running close.
(6) Eliyass ($12.00)
The former European ran third at Flemington in his first try, and although beaten in the Caulfield Cup, he still battled on gamely.
With nine wins from 13 starts, including big wins in Sydney, he can’t be overlooked as a first four chance.
(7) Docklands ($19.00)
Kicked off his Australian career with a fifth in the Cox Plate. Beaten 11.1 lengths by Via Sistina, but he managed to beat a few home.
He’s a tough runner to line up, but we’re prepared to give him another chance. Having the long Flemington straight to wind up could be his go.
(8) Royal Champion ($21.00)
Second behind Plenty of Ammo in the Crystal Mile, but we don’t think that race is the best guide for the Champions Stakes.
He has a nice win coming, but it’s likely in something a touch easier.
(9) Kingswood ($31.00)
An in-form runner having scored his last two, but they didn’t come at this level. We would be surprised if he figured in the placings.
(10) Via Sistina (Best Bet – $1.65)
The best Cox Plate victory we have seen in years and it’s why she’s the short favourite to make it three on the bounce.
She didn’t give them a chance at The Valley, and being a past winner at Flemington adds to her appeal. Therefore, we suggest taking the short odds and including her in multis.
James McDonald should get an ideal run from barrier four, so everything should pan out well.
(11) Atishu ($8.00)
It was good to see Atishu back in running form on Saturday when beating Amelia’s Jewel on the line.
She loves racing at Flemington, which makes her a first four chance, and she only needs to live up to that run to go close.
(12) Deny Knowledge ($27.00)
The seven-year-old held them off when winning at Caulfield over Mr Brightside before finishing a game fifth in the Caulfield Cup.
It’s not the worst form for this race, but given there are so many smart types, we have to leave her out.
