Darley Champions Sprint Form Guide & Tips
(1) Giga Kick (Best Bet – $4.40)
He was huge in The Everest and he arguably should have won. He dipped with 50m to go, which allowed Bella Nipotina to come back.
Unlike Bella Nipotina, he’s a past winner down the Flemington straight, and he’s clearly back to his best without winning a recent race.
We’re putting him on top at the each-way odds.
(2) Overpass ($6.00)
He won well in the Sydney Stakes, in a better time than The Everest. However, he’s a fresh up specialist, and he’s only a one-time winner second-up.
We think he’s too short in the betting, and punters are better to wait for him to head to Perth for the sprinting features next month.
(3) I Am Unstoppable ($23.00)
Two solid runs in defeat this preparation, but winning this race could be too much for him at this stage.
Wait until he find a slightly easier field later in the year, perhaps at Ascot or Morphettville.
(4) Baraqiel (Best Each Way – $9.50)
We couldn’t have been more impressed with Baraqiel at The Valley last start, and he could have matured into a Group 1-winning horse.
He is facing a sizable rise in class, but with six wins from eight starts, the sky is his limit. Our only worry is the inside draw, but he could tuck in behind and sprint late.
He’s dynamic, and we’re hoping he’s up to this level.
(5) Bella Nipotina ($3.80)
She couldn’t have been more impressive winning The Everest, and she followed it up with another awesome performance at Rosehill on Saturday.
We’re not leaving her out of our picks, but her record at Flemington is not good. She’s yet to win from 10 starts, and that’s tough to look past.
(6) Sunshine in Paris ($7.00)
Sunshine in Paris has followed Bella Nipotina throughout this preparation, including a fifth in The Everest and a 1.8-length second last time out.
She is a classy type in the making, and she enters trifecta and first four picks, but she might be a touch below the best in this race as a winning hope.
(7) Lady Laguna ($26.00)
It’s never easy to rule her out, especially after running third on Saturday. However, she has yet to fire at Flemington and we can’t see that changing.
The odds are reflective of her chances here.
(8) Estriella ($19.00)
She got back to winning form at Caulfield and she’s good enough to kick on with it, but we can’t see her beating this level of opposition.
Her odds are drifting and that’s not a good sign.
(9) Right to Party ($21.00)
It’s tough to leave out the four-year-old mare, having won four of her last five. However, we don’t think she’s up to this level yet.
It could come in the future, but for now, she’s being left out of our selections.
(10) Stretan Angel ($51.00)
She’s not running well enough to threaten them. We expect her to finish in the second half of the field.
(11) Private Life ($26.00)
He scored nicely at Caulfield over the mile, but that form hasn’t been franked with Feroce failing to fire on Saturday.
It’s age-group racing form and it’s unlikely to measure up against the best sprinters in Australia
(12) Bellatrix Star (Best Roughie – $13.00)
The Kiwi was unlucky on Saturday when bursting along the inside of runners behind Switzerland.
That’s an excellent form guide for this race, and she gets in with only 51.5kg. It’s a harder field, but we can’t leave her out at the double-figure odds.
