Race 1. (9:26) Speights Hurdle (3100m)
#2 – Hey Happy @ $1.60 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
Punters have to take short odds for Hey Happy, but after his Grand National Hurdle win on Wednesday, he’s the one they have to beat.
The Kevin Myers-trained gelding scored a flat win before winning on Wednesday, and although winning three times in a week is tough, he’s a tough type.
Punters should be confident and take the shorts.
Race 3. (10:34) Commodore Hotel Refurbishment Maiden (1400m)
#4 – Go Lotte @ $2.70 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
Go Lotte is getting close to a win after back-to-back placings and there aren’t too many tough types in this field.
The four-year-old mare ran second at Wingatui before placing last start and we expect that form to stack up nicely on Saturday.
The odds could firm into favouritism.
Race 5. (11:44) Zilco Handicap (1400m)
#3 – Kick On @ $2.80 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
The Myers-trained five-year-old didn’t fire at Riccarton last start but he’s much better than that and he could get back to his best.
He is a five-time winner from 17 starts and he owns a win and a placing from three starts on the track.
Getting 4kg off his back takes his weight to 51kg and he’s tough to beat from there.
Race 7. (12:54) Heatstore Handicap (1800m)
#1 – Verry Flash @ $2.70 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
Money has come for Verry Flash and we’re not surprised. The eight-year-old loves the wet and his 10 wins and 12 placings puts him above the rest.
The son of Zed has yet to win from four attempts on the track but he owns four placings and it’s about time he won at Riccarton.
Getting 3kg off his back helps and the odds appeal.

Race 2. (10:20) Iline Quality Surveyors Maiden (1400m)
#6 – On the Prowl @ $3.30 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
On the Prowl is on the verge of breaking her maiden status after five placings from nine starts and she deserves a winning break.
The four-year-old finished second at Rotorua two back before placing at Avondale last time out. That form stacks up highly and she has been well-backed.
2kg comes off her back and this is her best chance.
Race 3. (10:55) Iline Project Managers Handicap (1200m)
#2 – Aero De Paris @ $2.80 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
Aero De Paris is another runner getting close to scoring an overdue win after numerous placings this preparation.
The eight-year-old is a five-time winner over the distance and getting 3kg off his back should bring him into contention.
There is depth to this race but we’re sticking with the favourite.
Race 5. (12:06) Iline Carpenters Maiden (2100m)
#3 – The Bambino @ $3.80 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
The Bambino has improved with every run and he comes off a third placing at Avondale, so that form should hold up well.
He is another runner getting an apprentice claimer in the saddle and that’s handy. The 4kg coming off his back could make the difference between winning and losing.
We’re happy with the odds and they could shorten on race day.
Race 7. (13:13) Iline Waikato Handicap (1600m)
#1 – Helena Bay @ $3.20 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
Helena Bay has the class edge over this field and he got back to winning form at New Plymouth with a 2.5-length victory.
The John Bell-trained runner was good enough to go to Hong Kong, so he’s a smart type and conditions should be ideal on Saturday.
He could be a $2 chance, so take the value.
