Australian Open Golf Tips & Predictions

Australian Open Winner – Cameron Smith

We backed Smith at $9.00 last week, and although he finished second, it was still an excellent effort in defeat.

The LIV star and major winner is the best golfer in the field, so we’re not surprised by the shortening $7.50 available from bookmakers for Smith to go one better at Kingston Heath Golf Club and Victoria Golf Club this week.

There is no reason to jump off his back. He’s an exceptional player, and he has the fan support in Australia. Therefore, we’re jumping on him at the odds and he should be well-backed throughout the week.

Bet: Cameron Smith @ $7.50

Australian Open Next Best – Marc Leishman

The 41-year-old finished right behind Smith last week when posting a T3 result at the Australian PGA Championship, which was a great return to form.

Leishman is a proven winner on the world stage, and although his best form hasn’t come on the LIV Tour, he knows how to win tournaments in Australia, which is why we can’t leave him out of his picks at $11.00 odds.

The 2009 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year winner had a solid year at the majors in 2022 (his last year qualifying for majors), including a T14 at the U.S. Open and T30 at The Masters. There is nothing wrong with that form, and although it was two years ago, it shows he’s a good player on the big stage.

We’re happy with the odds available for the Australian, who also has the support of local golf fans.

Bet: Marc Leishman @ $11.00

Australian Open Best Value – Kazuma Kobori

New Zealand golfer Kazuma Kobori has made a good start to his professional career after a stellar amateur career across the Tasman.

The 23-year-old already has four PGA Tour of Australia wins, including the Webex Players Series in Victoria and Sydney, so that’s solid enough form to handle this field.

He’s playing against some of the best players in the world, which isn’t easy to do. However, he’s a natural talent, and he had similar amateur success to countryman Danny Lee, who had a good career on the PGA and LIV Tours.

Punters get $41.00 odds for Kobori, and those odds are generous. He could start well on Thursday and Friday and set himself up with a good weekend finish.

Bet: Kazuma Kobori @ $41.00

Australian Open 1st Round Leader – Joaquin Niemann

Niemann is the favourite to be first round leader at Kingston Heath, and we think he will start well and show how strong LIV golfers are.

The Chilean comes off a T7 finish at the DP World Tour Championship behind Rory McIlroy, and that’s good form for the Australian Open.

He is a proven winner around the world, including two wins on the PGA Tour in the Greenbrier and Genesis Invitational, before winning twice on the LIV Tour. He won both LIV Tour titles in 2024, and that’s why he’s favoured to win.

He’s set to make a good start on Thursday, so take the $7.50 available.

Bet: Joaquin Niemann @ $7.50
