With Sydney FC and Perth Glory not playing last time out, a huge opportunity was presented to Melbourne City to make headway in the top 3 of the A-League table but they fluffed their lines on the road at Wellington Phoenix. Elsewhere, Adelaide United made light work of the Central Coast Mariners, WSW and Newcastle Jets battled out an entertaining draw and Brisbane Roar carried on their superb run of form with an away win at Western United.
Here are our picks for the 20th round of fixtures in the A-League:
2019/20 A-League Round 20 Preview
Wellington Phoenix vs Western United – Wellington Regional Stadium
Wellington Phoenix ($1.63)
Western United ($5.25)
Two sides in the play-off race open the game week as Western United travel to Wellington Phoenix. Wellington Phoenix sit in 5th, six points clear of the chasing pack in the play-off race. They picked up a superb home win over Melbourne City last time out and they will be looking to continue their excellent run of form here. Western United meanwhile are in the midst of a poor run of form which has left them outside of the play-off places currently. Their defeat at home to Brisbane Roar last week could be particularly costly for their top 6 aspirations. With only one win in their last 6 matches, they will be desperate to try and stop the rot here. This should be a comfortable evening for Wellington Phoenix however in front of their home fans.

Western Sydney Wanderers vs Adelaide United – Bankwest Stadium
Adelaide United ($3)
WSW welcome Adelaide United to the Bankwest Stadium in what promises to be a huge game for both sides. The Wanderers were held to a draw by Newcastle Jets last time out and they appear to be sliding out of the play-off picture. They find themselves 8th in the table and they will be looking to close the gap on the sides above them in the play-offs, with the gap currently standing at 7 points. Adelaide United will be looking to build on their impressive win over Central Coast Mariners last time out and they currently find themselves in 4th place in the table. With the gap to Melbourne City above them now just three points, United will be desperate to pick up a big win here on the road. This could be a very tight game which Adelaide should just about prevail from.

Brisbane Roar vs Perth Glory vs – Dolphin Stadium
Brisbane Roar ($3.4)
Perth Glory ($2.2)
Brisbane Roar will be looking to maintain their excellent form as they welcome Perth Glory to Dolphin Stadium/ Roar have climbed up to 6th in the A-League table with four wins from their last 5 league fixtures. The manner of their win at Western United last time out will be hugely encouraging for all associated with the club and they will believe that they can sustain a genuine play-off push this term. Perth Glory meanwhile will be hoping to have benefited from a rest week last weekend and with Melbourne City dropping points above them, their quest to finish in the top 2 is looking stronger than ever. They are unbeaten in their last 5 which should set this one up very nicely. This should be an excellent game between two sides that play good football and the points look set to be shared here.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw ($3.55) Bet Now
Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne Victory – McDonald Jones Stadium
Newcastle Jets ($2.3)
Melbourne Victory ($3.1)
Two sides in basement battle trouble face off as Melbourne Victory travel to the Newcastle Jets. The Jets sit second-bottom of the table with 17 games played and with 5 points collected from their last 3 games, momentum is starting to build at the McDonald Jones Stadium. They look too far back to make a play-off push, but a win here would see them leapfrog Melbourne Victory. For Victory meanwhile, this season has been a huge disappointment. They had realistic hopes of finishing well inside the top 4 at the start of the campaign but they find themselves 9th and with a 9-point gap to overturn if they are to make it into the play-offs come the end of the season. This should be a tight game in Newcastle that could well end up honours even.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw ($3.65) Bet Now
Central Coast Mariners vs Sydney FC – Central Coast Stadium
Central Coast Mariners ($5)
Sydney FC ($1.7)
It’s bottom vs top in the A-League as the Central Coast Mariners host high-flying Sydney FC. 5 consecutive defeats have left the Mariners bottom of the table following and their defeat at Adelaide United last weekend was particularly uninspiring. They have been fighting hard throughout the campaign however and they will be desperate to start picking up points quickly as they look to pull away from wooden spoon contention this term. Sydney FC meanwhile should be raring to go after a scheduled rest week last weekend and a postponement the week before. They look to have the title wrapped up already, with a 10-point lead to the chasing pack and 3 games in hand on Melbourne City below them. They will be focusing their attention towards the impending play-offs and they will be eager to keep the momentum going here. This should be a comfortable afternoon on the road for Sydney FC.
